Merida is a beautiful city and it is conveniently located close to many beautiful touristy sites that aren't necessarily crowded but well worth the visit. Unfortunately, because there is not much demand (not many people know!) it also makes the information hard to find. I have listed here the best I can, all the tours and places I could, but many of them do not have prices. I suggest calling Carmen Travel Services if you wish to make reservations. They are located in the Fiesta Americana Hotel (Mall) which is located near many of the most popular hotels like Holiday Inn, Hyatt and only a short distance away from El Conquistador Hotel. Call: 23-91-33 or 23-97-86. The bus terminal is also located here as well -- you will probably arrive here from Cancun.

Tour the City by Bus
Discover Merida on an open panoramic site seeing bus called "Carnaval." Tour includes a multilingual guide so you can see and learn about some of the most important sites in Merida: Santa Lucia Park and Church, Santa Ana Park and Church, Av. The Puuc Route
There are hundreds and hundreds of ruins in Yucatan, many of which are only a bus ride away from Merida. These ancient pyramids are older than 1000 years and make excellent site seeing adventures. One of the best tours that lets you enjoy them all is called "The Puuc Route". Visit Uman, Yaxcopoil, Uxmal, Kabah, Sayil, Xlapak, Labna, Loltun, Ticul and Oxkintok, some of which are famous ruins, and others which are little quaint towns. Dzibilchaltún
This archeological site who's name means "Where there is writing on flat rocks," is only 10 minutes north from Merida so if you can't find the time to view the larger sites, here is a good place. There are beautiful pyramids (one with it's own equinox show) and a large centote of fresh water that you can actually swim in. Just take care because there is a vast underground river, and if you swim in one corner of the cenote, (the part which is 40m deep) this river will suck you under. For more info go to my Ruins page.

The Convent Route
Many small towns, including the city of Merida still have ancient convents from the Colonial period. All though some people say "Once you've seen one church, you've seen 'em all" I don't think this is necessarily true. Each has its own features and history, from Papal visits to Mayan book burnings to churches made out of Mayan ruins, I don't think any of them are the same.

As well, you can see the Mexican/Mayan culture at hand. These cities are mostly untouched by touristy enterprises so there is always something new to see. Many have their own secrets such as the best poc chuc in Yucatan or people who speak Mayan as a FIRST LANGUAGE. Tour to Uxmal
Visit the beautiful and large ruins of Uxmal without all the crowds. Unlike Chichen Itza, Uxmal has yet to be discovered by the flocks of Cancun tourists but it is just as beautiful and big, if not bigger than Chichen. Transportation on this specific tour includes bilingual guide, air-conditioned van, visit to Uxmal, and Hacienda Temozon South which includes your meal (but not drinks), travelers insurance and entrance tickets.

Uxmal Light and Sound
The light and sound show of Uxmal consists of a combination of lights, which stand out the marvelous buildings, while the important voice of Ricardo, Mone Alban, Blanca Sanchez among others relate Mayan splendor and knowledge. Also you will have the opportunity to hear the legend of the princess Sac-Nicte by Antonio Mediz Bolio (beautiful if you ever read it in Spanish!). Tour includes round trip air-conditioned transportation to Uxmal, guide, music, travel insurance and entrance ticket.

Mayan City
Located very close to Merida's Main Square and City Zoo is Mayan City, a tourist center built Mayan style with stone reproductions of Chichen Itza's El Castillo, El Caracol astronomic observatory and others. Mayan city appears to be unique in mexico and ahs a capacity for over 600 people with shows and Yucatecan cuisine.

Izamal by Train
Every Sunday departs the train for a wonderful day trip to Izamal. This includes roundtrip transportation (train), air-conditioning, tour of the city, lunch, and folkloric ballet show.

Izamal Bus Service
Visit Izamal by yourself instead of on a tour. Bus leaves every 1/2 hour from 5am-11pm.

Archeological and Colonial Tour
Visit Dzibichaltun and some other very beautiful places such as: Real Street, Country's Monument, Sport Man Avenue, Salvador Alvarado Staduim, Gonzalo Guerrero's Monument, Cordemex Complex, Archeological zone Dzibilchaltun, Musuem of the mayan people, temple of the seven dolls, open chapel temple, the xlacah cenote (swim here!) and Hacienda San Antonio cucul.

Celestun
A beautiful site rich in color and life. In Celestun you can enjoy a safari on a salt water river to view over 10 000 flamingos, and then swim in a cenote, or you can travel to the little fishing village and enjoy delicious crab claws. I recommend seeing the flamingos -- Tour Includes: Covered motor boats, with seats for about 6 people, transportation down the river to view these graceful pink birds. Then on the way back, the boat may tour through the mangroves and will take you to a fresh water spring right beside the river. You can take a relaxing swim in the spring which is 2 meters deep and it is so clear, you can see right to the bottom. It is worth your money.

Fishing Tour
This is a fishing adventure to the small fishing village of Celestun, 52 miles from Merida. You will be picked up at your hotel and a light breafast of pastry & beverage will be served during the trip. Trip includes a 28ft boat with canvas shade top, fishing gear and bait. On the way out the inlet river to the gulf of Mexico, you may see flamingos and other native birds. There are many fish and they suggest a catch and release. Keep only what you plan to eat for lucn and your catch will be prepared for you at a local Celestun restaurant. During your trip back you will have time for photos and enjoyment of the culture. Return is around 3 or 4pm.

Rio Lagartos
This beautiful Wild Animal Refuge is a sanctuary to approx 30,000 pink flamingos, deer, crocodiles, jaguars as well as various species of exotic flowers and trees. It is a definite must see and I have heard many good things about it. It is also protected by the Mexican Government since there are so many endangered species here. If you are an environmental enthusiast or just curious, this is your paradise.

Progreso

Although they aren't the waters of the Caribbean, Progresso beaches are still beautiful. White cool sand, blue waters (especially like the Caribbean from June-August), fine restaurants, and uncrowded space! Progresso is only 20km (30miles) or so from Merida and is on the same highway to get to Dzibilchaltun.

Autoprogreso
Rutas Tecnologico (Avenida Tecnologico). This bus makes a direct route to Progresso. It is the cheapest but there is no air-conditioning or music. You may catch it on this avenue -- Avenida Tecnologico. The bus will have the name "Autoprogreso" on the side.

Omnibuses (air-conditioning/music)
This is another line that goes to Progreso, only it should be more comfortable with the air-conditioning. However, I don't think this one makes pick up stops on the Av. Tecnologico, so it would probably be best to phone them and ask where you can catch the bus.

Night Life

Discos
If you want something do to at night, this is your place. There are at least three dance clubs such as Tequila Rock, Kalia and the new Vatsya. All of them have loud music, bright lights, drinks and more. I would suggest phoning during the day and reserving a table because at night, the places are packed. Prices range from 30 pesos to 40 pesos, and prices usually are based on gender. (Women cheaper, sorry guys)

There are also maybe 5 movie theatres in which you can watch the latest movies too. Just make sure to ask whether the movie has subtitles, otherwise you may be disappointed when the movie is in Spanish. (Generally, kids movies are the only ones that are Spanish)

Serenede
For the more laid back people, a beautiful Serenede which is music and dancing performed in the Regional Yucatecan dress. Located in Santa Lucia Park, 9pm every Thursday.
The Serenata Universitaria is on Fridays at 9pm twice a month and is at Teatro Jose Peon Contreras.

Ballet Folklorico
A beautiful mix of regional traditional Mexican music, dress and dance from all over Mexico. A must see in the 100 year old theatre. Every Wednesday at 9pm in Teatro Jose Peon Contreras.

Mexican Night
I have yet to find specific information on this local fiesta, but it takes place at the south end of Paseo Montejo and seems to be a jumble of food, music, dance and crafts, all based on Mexican traditions and customs. It is only on Saturday nights

Merida en Domingo
Every Sunday in Merida in the Park of the Americas, you can enjoy a stroll through the main plaza and experience Merida's real charm here, for while the streets are closed to traffic, there are many things to enjoy about the tree lined park.

Many Meridan locals come to enjoy the park and men pushing carts full of tortas, (sandwiches) elotes (corn) and fruit drinks are there to serve the crowd. Small flee markets selling various local and handmade items of interest are also set up, but if this isn't your interest, perhaps you might like to sit back and enjoy a mariba or one of several concerts of folkloric dance performance and bands that offer interesting Yucatecan/Mayan music.

Merida's Cathedral San Idelfonso
Meridás cathedral, San Idelfonso is a beautiful and ancient church located in the main city square by the government palaces. It is celebrating 400 years of construction, regional history and of being a landmark for both locals and guests. Built with the stones from the pyramids of Mayan city named t'ho, it is the first cathedral to be built on the north American continent. Look around and you may even see glyphs on the stones of the walls. You can well imagine the history and legends that its huge fortress like walls enclose.

Built in 1562-1598, if you learn about the history of this church, you will hear about the raid and great damage done on September 24, 1915, when machete welding railroad workers and port stevedores stormed the church and wreaked havoc. They burned statues, idols, paintings, pews and even pulled the great organ located on the seocnd floor choir balcony to death by smashing, with the help of mules. Take note of the impressive painting on the south wall depicting the meeting when the mayan nobles joined the Spanish conquerors in 1514. This trust was dishonored and marked the beginning of the downfall of the mayan empire. Mases are daily at 8:15am and there are 7 mases on Sunday. It is located close to Paseo Montejo, on Calle 63 x 60 y 62, right next to the government palaces and a pretty park.

Cantón Palace/Regional Museum of Antropologia and History
Located on Paseo Montejo por calle 43, this is one of the most beautiful and wll known buildings in the city. Of Italian renassance architectural style, most of the materials used in the construction of this building were imported from Europe, especially France. During the 1930's, Canton Palace was bought by the government to convert it into theHidalgo and Beautiful Arts school. In 1958, the building was declared the "oficial residence of the governers."

In 1977 the Palace became the "Regional Museum of Antropologia and History" which takes up many different rooms in the house. Some of the contents are from ruins in Yucatan as well as the studied history of the Mayans. There is also a bookstore that specializes in Antropologia.

House of Montejo
Located on Calle 63 x 60 y 62, this house belonged to the Yucatan conquerer Francisco de Montejo "El adelantado" and was ordered to be built by his son Francisco de Montejo "El Mozo"between the years 1543 and 1549. A jewel of great historical and artistic value, the most notable example of this is it's "civil architecture"with not to be un-noticed art from renassance, gothic isabelin and native influence. Cost: I believe this has now be converted into a bank.

Government Palace
Located on Calle 61 x 60 y 62 right beside Cathedral of San Idelfonso, this building was inagurated on the 15th of September 1592 in Neoclasic architectural style. Based on 2 levels, there are many itneresting things to look at, most notably the murals of ancient mayan history and such, painted on the walls and balcony of the second level (by Fernand Castro Bacheco). A must see!

Parque del Centenario -- City Zoo
Lions, Tigers and a walk in bird jungle. Take a peso ride on the train that goes through the whole zoo. Visit exotic regional and non regional animals. Playground for the kids and lots of traditional crafts foods and mexican people. Located at Calle 59 by Ave Itzaes.

The Hacienda Teya
A 300 year old country mansion is 10km out of town, and you can enjoy real Yucatecan food here or just stroll through the gardens, mansions or the church on this large country property. As well, in the restaurant there is a hostess who can give you the history of the hacienda and food, (in english) and this place provides beautiful pictures. Admission is free, but the food isn't. They have good poc chuc here if you can't decide which food to try, and for dessert try the flan. To read more about it visit my Teya page

Hacienda Katanchel
Also located close to Merida, this Ex-henequen hacienda has also been restored like Teya and has been converted into a nice touristic site. I have heard rumours that it is also a hotel but don't take my word for it. The haciendas here are very beautiful and although I have not seen this one, if it is anything like Teya, go and see it.

Progresso
The pretty port city of Progresso (which has miles of white sand beaches) is only 36km away from Merida (30 miles) and it offers some wonderful swimming, tanning, shopping, lounging as well as several dance clubs near by (Crazy Wetch is a good one). You can even rent a condo on the beach if you wish.

Chicxulub
A small fishing village with nice beaches and blue waters. There are lots of Hotels and condos here which make it an ideal place to get away from it all. Inquire within to rent condos, which always have their own swimming pool and nice beach. A few km away are Uaymitun, San Benito and San Bruno beaches which are recommended for a visit.

Telchac
One of the most beautiful flourishing tourism complexes is located here. It includes hotels, restaurants, boutiques, handcraft shops and much more. One of the hotels is an all-inclusive and very popular with the Canadian snowbirds.

Sisal
Only 53km from Merida, this legendary port is located in the eastern part of Yucatan and was the main port of entry and exit to the rest of the world in the 19th century. Through it has passed a variety of products including the famous henquen. The huge walls were raised by ancient settlers as protection against pirates and these are well worth a visit. The beaches are nice and the sea is fairly quiet. This is also the destination of many migratory birds who arrive each year, among them the Canadian Goose.

El Palmar
One of Yucatan's most important nature reserves, El Palmar protects a variety of flora and fauna, forming an interesting visit. Another attraction is it's enormous lighthouse (considered biggest in Yucatan).

Izamal
This little village is far from small and boring. It was chosen by Pope John Paul as the site of his meeting with the natives of Mexico during his most recent visit to Mexico. This place has almost everything: Mayan ruins, huge convents (one built on top of a mayan pyramid), nice design, cute streets and parks (horse drawn carriages) and many things more. The most famous part of Izamal is the convent of the Virgin of the Conception -- built on top of the mayan ruin Kinich Kakmo, the country's theird largest prehispanic pyramid whose remains have been partially preserved here. This was also the first convent ever built in Latin America.

Valladolid
A historic city just before chichen still has it's colonial flavor, although there are hotels being built nearby. There is teh Cathedral of St. GFervase, the Convent of St. Bernard and teh Temple of St. John, only three of the many. Among plazas and restaurants, don't forget to dip in the Dzitnup cenote which has amazingly clear waters.

Tizimin
A livestock center and economica capital of the eastern part of Yucatan. The famous Feria de los Reyes (King's Fair) is also an interesting site. Very close are the remains of the important Mayan city Culuba.

San Felipe
A small fishing village this place is a cultury calm site to visit. Don't forget to try their seafood.

Puuc Sites

Uman
Just a few km from Merida, this beautiful village is known for its big church, a great example of colonial architecture.

Yaxcopoil Hacienda
Located just a few mintues from the capital as well, this hacienda dates backto the 17th century. Today it is a museum of henequen, the haciendas and their owners.

Ticul
Once the seat of the Powerful Tutul Xiu, you can visit the 17th century Franciscan Temple of St. Anthony of Padua, buy beautiful handicrafts or acquire the fine shoes for which this town is famous (leather shoes real cheap).

Oxkintok
One of the oldest cites in Yucatan, stelas and inscruptions found here have provided valuable info on the Mayan Culture. Its architecture is representative of the splendid Puuc style.

Convent Sites

Acanceh
A small quiet village about 30km from Merida. It contains "the Square of Cultures" -- the town square that includes prehispanic, colonial and modern constructions. The Temple of Our Lady of the Nativity, built in the 16 century is a great example of the Franciscan style widely found in this region.

Tecoh
The Temple and Ex-Convent dedicated to the Virgin of the Asencion rised out of a hill, possible the base of an ancient mayan pyramid. Other attractions of Tecoh are the Municipal Palace and a cenote with some pretty caves.

Telchaquillo
A franciscan temple which consistes of stones from Mayan Artesians. A staircase in the town center leads to a cenote.

Tekit
This was once an important town in the Colonial era. Twho of its religious structures that stand out are: The ex convent of St. Anthony of Padua and the Chapel of St Christopher.

Mama
The temple and ex convent are living reminders of the great labor of the Franciscans. Near by is Tipich a typical henequen hacienda.

Chumayel
A copy of the Books of Chilam Balam, considered the Mayan Bible was found here. The 16 century temple dedicated to the Purest Conception shelters various beautiful images.

Teabo
An ancient mayan cememtary is found here as well as the Temple of St. Paul and the Indian's Chapel.

Tipikal
Here are located some more beautiful churches such as the one dedicated to the Virgin of the Magdalen and its ex convent of carved steps.

Mani
This is the infamous site where Bishop Friar Diego de Landa burned valuable Mayan codices and transcrips; a true loss for us. The temple of the Convent of St. Micheal the archangel still conserves this tragic past. The great thing about Mani is it's Poc Chuc, a small restaraunt here makes the best and most famous poc chuc in all of Yucatan. To eat here is a must.

Oxkutzcab
Known as "The Garden of Yucatan" for it's exotic fruits, this little town is a delicious must. Here you can also visit the Century church or the Hermitage of the Virgin of the Pillar.
