What's Up

by Kultur Kolla

The Kultur Kolla (aka me) went to the Lionel Wendt on the 24th to get some tickets to the new Indu Dharmasena play "Aladdin" since, unlike other reviewers, he doesn't get free tickets and invitations to premieres (hint hint.) On my way out the door I looked into the gallery and saw something that piqued my curiosity. So I stick my head in and see that the walls are covered in what looks like pieces of mirror. Always on the lookout for new and interesting things (and beeing fond of seeing my beautiful face in as many mirrors as possible) I stepped inside to see what's up.

I was later told that they are called "mirror collages." They are the creations of Maheshi Munasinghe, an interior designer from Kurunegala. Made of pieces of mirror and jute twine they are truly eye-catching pieces. However, to describe them like that doesn't do them justice. The geometrically shaped mirror pieces are arranged in designs over tight swirls and whorls of jute twine. The natural earthy colours of the twine serve as a nice contrast to the shiny mirror pieces.

Later, I asked Maheshi about her creations. The first thing I wanted to know was "why?" The answer I got was "Everything is so stale." She went on to explain to me that as an interior designer she needed wall hangings and was tired of the same old stuff that everyone else uses. So she created her own. Maheshi has been working as an interior designer for seven years and has been making her collages for the past three.

This exhibition had 68 ("an odd number to put on show," she says) pieces on show, and to put it quite frankly I liked all of them. My sentiments that seemed to be shared by many others to judge by the "sold" signs that dotted most of the exhibits.

So you heard it here first, folks. It may not be high art, but its good to look at and nice to hang on your walls. Keep your eyes open for Ms. Munasinghe and her next creations, you will be glad you did. Meanwhile, I have a play to go see.
