Letter from Martin in Kenya to Parp

26/4/97

Me & Blokey just dragged each other up and over Mt Kenya. We spent 5 days on the mountain and it was a good laugh. It was cold (especially for Ian inhis lovely net sleeping bag 'cos he sweats like a pig). The last two days were almost non-stop rain - but hell it was a challenge!

The few days before this the three of us (Ian, Emma & me) went hiking in Hells Gate National Park (it's by Lake Naivasha [?]). The place is beautiful & you can walk in it - not many parks you can do that in. Walk with the antelope, zebra, buffalo, giraffe, water hogs, etc. Didn't see the leopard or lion though.

Best bit about Hells Gate was the baboons trashing our camp site! No-one else in the park (literally, no-one goes there). We took the food so they didn't go for that but instead they flattened the tents and ripped into Ians to get the oxo cubes, toothpaste & vitamin pills (can you believe it). Took about 1.5 hours to clear up and fix stuff - tents a bit knacked though.

Didn't actually get up Mount Kilimanjaro as planned a) because time was short, b) 'cos it costs over $300 to do it. Going to go to Nairobi National Park tomorrow to see some animals for the last time before leaving (Parole) Africa.

Take care,

Your friend Murton.
