We started at the Maura Ferry Terminal in Brunei. Our plan was to go to Labuan, a Malaysian Island near Brunei, by a ferry (speed boat) and then take another ferry to Kota Kinabalu City in Sabah, Malaysia. |

Kota Kinabalu Ferry Terminal |
The
bumpy ferry ride was fun and we could follow the actions in the Chinese
Comedy Video shown on board. After we reached Kota
Kinabalu City Ferry Terminal, we had to take a taxi to the Mount Kinabalu
Park Head Quarters which is about 83 kilometres away from the city.

The road to the park head
quarters wind around mountainous terrain with beautiful scenery. It took
us about 2 hours to get to the park headquarters which is situated at an
elevation of 1,524m (5,000 feet).
We had booked accommodation at the Park Head Quarters for that night. They have beautifully located accommodation at very reasonable rates. The facilities range from dormitories to cottages and cabins to villas. We chose to stay at Nepenthes Villa. There are two restaurant/canteens too. |

The accommodation
has to be booked in advance. The staff at the park are very polite, courteous
and helpful. They even helped us to book a taxi in advance.
The park requires you to hire an authorised guide. The guides are not employees of the park but the staff at park headquarters will assist you to find a guide on the day of your ascent. Optionally, you can hire a porter too to carry you belongings. |
