Kuranda Scenic Rail

Rounding a bend into a tunnel.
This historic railway was built in response to a prolonged wet season in 1882. Boggy roads left miners without supplies and on the verge of famine. The line runs from Cairns to Kuranda through a rugged terrain, and much of the construction was done by hand. It opened in 1891.

The ride takes you past sugar cane   fields and waterfalls, through tunnels, and into the picturesque town of Kuranda. Once in Kuranda you can take rainforest tours, shop for local crafts, or visit a pub.
