The first immigrants arrived in
1870 and they were all Prussian (German). New recruitments of
foreigners began to arrive from 1875: Swiss, Italian, French,
Austrian and Poles. Thus, on October 31, 1900, the Government
elevated the locality to the municipal district condition,
that started to call it Garibaldi, in honor to the Italian
commander "Giuseppe Garibaldi", participant of the
Farroupilha Revolution and hero of two worlds.
