From July 15 to July 30, 1999, Doris and I traveled through Ireland. After exploring the South and
South - West in 1997, we decided to concentrate on the West and North - West this time, although we
also spent some time in the region of Dublin.
Although we initially planned to fly to Shannon, we had to start our trip in Dublin as all flights to Shannon were booked out. So, we drove from Dublin to Shannon right after arriving in Dublin. From there, our journey began. First, we visited the Cliffs of Moher. Although we were there two years ago, we decided to go back again since we had very bad weather in 1997. This time, it was slightly better as it was not raining all the time. We did, however, get some showers. Then, we drove through the region called The Burren which offers some unusual landscapes. However, since we explored this part of Ireland thoroughly on our previous trip, we passed it rather quickly on our way to Connemara, one of Ireland's most beautiful rural areas. Unfortunately, Connemara is also known as the region in Europe that gets the most rain - this fact even is confirmed by the Guinness book of records. From here, we proceeded further North to Achill Island. On this Island, you will even find a nice sandy beach - although the water temperature is not really inviting for even a short swim. We then made our way thru North - West Ireland to the very northernmost point of Ireland, Malin Head on Inishowen peninsula. This peninsula offers some very nice places and great vista points, so we spent a whole day there. This was also the memorable day the rain that we had experienced over the past days finally ended. From here, it was not very hard to determine where to go - once you're on the northernmost point of any island, going south is the most sensible thing to do. So we drove to Birr which is rather close to Dublin, before returning to the Capital of Ireland where we spent the last two days. |
