This photo of Toby (right) and me was taken just previous to our leaving Ugakjualik on the trek home. We are attired for travel in our japas (heavy parkas, dog fur trim on the hood) and kamiik (caribouskin boots). Incidentally, the traditional way that the skin is softened for use in kamiik is by chewing it. There are some who still do this, and Paul and Toby bought their kamiik from one who does. And she did an excellent job, as they were the most comfortable and warmest footwear I've worn. It was like walking around in the snow in your slippers. Underneath the kamiik I was also sporting some sealskin socks. You wear those with the fur next to your skin, and Wow! Are those ever soft and warm! |
