Nâ `Aumâkua

Nâ `aumâkua mai ka lâ hiki a ka lâ kau.

From the zenith to the horizon.

Nâ `aumâkua iâ ka hina kua, iâ ka hina alo.
Guardians spirits to my back, to my front.

Iâ ka`a `âkau i ka lani.
To those in the northern position of the heavens.

`O kîhâ i ka lani.
Whispering in the heavens.

`Owê i ka lani.
Murmuring in the heavens.

Nûnulu i ka lani.
Reverberating in the heavens.

Kâholo i ka lani.
Running across the heavens.

Eia ka pulapula a `oukou, `o (inoa).

E mâlama `oukou ia`u (iâ mâkou).
Take care of me (us).

Allow growth upon the islands of Hawai`i.

Mahalo iâ Uncle Charlie Maxwell for teaching us this chant on Maui, January, 1997,
in the presence of and with the inspiration, prayers, and blessings
of Kahu Papa David (Kâwika) Ka`alakea,
who is now `aumakua, himself.
