(Hey look! An update after 4 or so many years!)
July 25th, 2006: I've been very bad....
I.... erm.... well, y'see, right now, I'm probably poorer than ever before due to the car and computer repairs all being at once.... well, today's also the release day of a DVD that I've been waiting 10 years for. Being as much of an Animaniacs fan as I am, it's VERY hard to resist the DVD. VERRY hard. I wandered to the electronics department of Wal*Mart as I was grocery shopping, just seeing if they had it and what it was like up close. I couldn't find it at first, and half-hoped they didn't have it, just for the temptation factor. I knew that if I didn't see them in the first 3 passes, they weren't there, because I'm always on the lookout for the Warners. If I see Mickey Mouse's black head with white face, my first thought is, "YAKKO". My brain is very trained to lock on to the Warners. Then, I saw the Pinky and the Brain DVD. Getting warm. Very warm. Looked around the surrounding spots. No Animaniacs. NO ANIMANIACS! Pinky and the Brain are good, but Animaniacs is my must-have. The tag for that spot said Pinky and the Brain. I wondered, and looked behind the first box to see if the Warner brothers and Warner sister were hiding behind the mice. There it was. The Animaniacs DVD, in all its glory. It looked better than the pictures online let it on to look. There were pictures of the Warners in the background doing wackier things than what they were doing in the foreground. It was shiny. I read the back. Good job with the description. I loved it. "Four score and seven years ago... sorry, wrong address. Water Tower, c/o Warner Bros. Studio..." It was obviously written by someone who wrote for the Animaniacs. I wondered about the languages available. Might I get the Spanish version? Surely I'd get the French version, that's standard. I saw something as strange as Yakko, Wakko and Dot: the languages available were English, and PORTUGUESE! Wow. THAT is weird. I've never seen that on a DVD, and it's especially funny because those are the only two languages on there. This DVD set is marketed in the United States and Canada, and the only alternate language is PORTUGUESE?! Might as well go with Russian, or Klingon(Klingon wouldn't be quite as weird, since it's spoken in the U.S. more than Portuguese). Portuguese isn't a big language in the U.S. or Canada. In the U.S., you have English and Spanish. In the Canada, you have English and French. This will be fun. I love different. I held it for several moments(I was having a moment), trying to decide if I should buy it today. I eventually put it back, then made my way toward the grocery department, but turned around before I got there, and went back to the electronics dept. I thought for a little longer, and slowly put the DVD in my cart. I thought for more time as I walked around the department, then I put it back in favor of having cash to replace my hard drive. As I walked away, I got a very empty feeling. That is MY DVD! I felt as if I were leaving a near and dear friend behind, rejecting them. No, not a friend, but rather a part of me. I was leaving a part of ME behind as I walked away from the electronics department, Warners not in hand. It was like doing a drawing that meant a lot to me, and throwing it away. All the other DVDs there, those are pop culture things that mean nothing to me and are spiffy to everybody. This, this was a part of MY world, the only piece of MY world, in this world. I went back and reclaimed what was mine, and wandered around Wal-Mart, trying out this new feeling of being reunited with my world. Being reunited with a piece of myself. I was liking it. The deep emptiness I had when I put the DVD back, was gone. My only worry in the world was money. I don't value money enough. I value my happiness much more than moolah. More than anything in the world, I value my happiness, and sanity. I have been lacking in entertainment lately. I haven't had a good laugh in so long. I felt an obligation to buy this on release day. The more DVDs Warner Bros. sells on opening day, the more they'll like the Animaniacs. No other day matters to their numbers. I want to show Warner Bros. that I love the Animaniacs. I've been waiting for this DVD for over 10 years, and I've been doing random searches for "Animaniacs DVD" at least once each year. I knew long ago that I'd buy it opening day, whether I had the money or not. Today was the ultimate test of that, being poorer than I ever expected. My love of the sibs is too big to walk away from them when they're finally, in, my grips. I'm excited to see the special features. I've seen all of the episodes on this set, due to Cartoon Network only re-running the first 40 episodes for the time I had cable. It's been several years since I've seen them, but I've seen these episodes enough times. I'm going to give them a new look, in Portugese, and try to see how well I remember the lines in English. I don't know what to say the monkeys won't do...
Current Mood: ecstatic and satiated
Update: Actually, I had never seen "Space Probed" or "Hercule Yakko" yet! I was in shock as I watched those two cartoons. They were great. I did, however realize just how infrequent the Warners were shown on their own show. I was disappointed. The Warners and Pinky & The Brain are really what make me such an Animaniacs fan. Skippy & Slappy are also on my favorites, along with Goodfeathers. Many months later, I finally watched Godfather and Goodfellas, and was even more of a fan of Goodfeathers. "What? He was bustin' my beak over here!" has new meaning to me now.
