My favourite moment By Owen Severn Place: Old Trafford Event: FA cup 3rd Round Opponents: Man Utd |

West Ham went into the game after recently losing to Man Utd 3-1 in the league, so it was still fresh in the minds of the players. But for us fans travelling up to Manchester it was a day of excitment and great expectations. I speak for myself when I say I would have been happy with a draw to bring the game back to Upton Park where we could have the home advantage. West Hams squad going into the game had a few holes due to injuries but we still fielded the strongest team possible. West Ham played like a team with a real passion but that was dented slightly early on when Hislop made a dodgy clearence which Tihnen thankfully cleared of the line, the hammers could breathe again! The irons then put up a stiff resistance for the rest of the match with Man scum only occasionaly coming close to scoring. We looked dangerous a couple of times with Joey Cole coming close with a long range effort. Toward the end of the second half it looked as though the game was heading into a replay at Upton Park, when The hammers had a break away, they had Man Utd on the back foot kanoute had the ball down the right and he then placed the ball perfectly for Di Canio to pick up. The linesman kept his flag lowered after shouts of offisde from the man Utd back four, and Di Canio ran on, but Batrhez kept his hand up and just stood there and only reacted to Di Canio when he was feet from goal but it was to late to stop the Italian maestro from scoring the most memorable goal to me. When that goal was scored the 9000 West Ham fans went MAD, the players went MAD, Di Canio went Mad. West Ham had scored against the chmapoins in the FA cup 3rd round. Once the irons were a goal to the good, man utd piled forwards, finally ending the game with FOUR stirkers on the pitch but it wasn't enough to stop the mighty Hammers going into the fourth round. That game, that day, that goal was and is my most memorable moment supporting West Ham. |
