SALVES ~ POULTICES ~ SYRUPS 

To make syrups - Dissolve 3 pounds of brown sugar in a pint of boiling water. Boil until thick. You may then add this to any substance to make a syrup. To make a herb syrup add the herbs, boil to a good consistency and strain through a double cheesecloth and bottle. If you cork it then it will last a long time.

To make herb salves - Dry and use fresh herbs but dried can be used as well. Be sure the herb is cut up to a fine state and use one to one of cocoa far, lard or any pure vegetable fat and four ounces of beeswax. Mix together, cover and place in the hot sun for about 4 hours. Strain with cheesecloth. Put into containers while still warm and use when set. DO NOT remelt.

To make poultices - Have herbs in a crushed form. Mix with water and cornmeal to make a thick paste. If you are using fresh herbs, place them directly on the affected part. Poultices should be applied as hot as possible without burning and replaced as soon as it has cooled. The following are recommendations and do not replace a physicians medical advice. Slippery Elm Useful with other herbs.
Lobelia and Slippery Elm One third part Lobelia and 2/3 Slippery Elm. Good for blood poisoning, boils and rheumatism.
Charcoal and Hops Removes gallstone pain
Charcoal and Smartweed Good for inflammation of the bowels. When using for old sores and ulcers add powered Echinacea, Golden Seal or Myrrh.
Poke Root and Cornmeal Excellent for inflamed breasts.
Burdock Leaf This is cooling and drying. A poultice of the powered root with salt eases the pain of a wound from an animal.
Plantain Excellent to prevent blood poisoning
Nettle and Wintergreen For dissolving tumors.
Carrots and Golden Seal Applied to old sores, will help heal them quickly.
Sage For inflammation of any type.
Hyssop Will remove discoloration from bruises.
