Case history:
- Vineet suffers from a congenital disease called spina bifida. The Ultra Sono Graphy of the fetus done in the sixth month of conceivement did show hydrocephalus and spina bifida. Due to this he was born with meningomyelocele ,a sort of swelling which was protruding from the dorsa lumbar region at the time of his birth. There was a large bony deformity at the dorsolumbar spine. The tumor was masked by a very thin layer of membrane. A day later when he was admitted to the hospital there was associated leakage of some kind fluid from the site . It looked dangerous. He was operated for this raw tumor within 48 hours of his birth. There was accumulation of excess water (cerebro spinal fluid) in his brain. The disease being called as hydrocephalus. The skull near the forehead was a bit swollen because of the collected CSF as the channel to flow the CSF was incomplete through the spinal cord. He was operated for this within a week after the meningomyelocele operation. A left sided VP shunt was implanted to drain the CSF. All these operations were carried out in the Calcutta Medical and Research Institute, Calcutta. At the time of his birth he also suffered from Tallipas of the right leg. He was not operated for this.
- This disease has led to Vineet having no sensation whatsoever in his legs due to which he cannot walk and also has no voluntary control over the passage of urine and stools or any other activity below his waist. There developed some infection in his shunt ..which was marked by red inflammation on the skin along the shunt near the ears when he was eleven months old. His shunt was revised again. Since then there has been no other anomalies of this kind. The revised shunt remains proper and functional .
- The only other problem which is recurring is the pressure sores . As for his congenital ailments , they remain the same.
- He undergoes normal pediatric treatments for his seasonal illness.
