| excerpt from Godzilla - The Interview by Mark Brownell |
| Let's talk tech now. You were the product of nuclear testing. Correct? That's right. I was once just a simple lizard swimming in the reefs off the Bikini Island atoll until the American nuclear testing changed my life forever. So you were a product of the Cold War. Very much so. Yes. My character represents (metaphorically) the consequences of nuclear proliferation. But the Cold War has been over for some time now. How does your character endure? The nuclear menace has been replaced with the menace of high technology. In my new film, I represent that force of nature that cannot be tamed - a "force majeur" as they say in insurance circles. Humans always try to conquer me with technological advances with disastrous and entertaining results. How does this anti-tech metaphor manifest itself in the plot of your movies? I walk through a lot of power lines. I also melt tanks. I've melted thousands of tanks over the years. And there is always some kind of hi-tech death ray that they aim at me that always fails. Are you on-line? Yes. I'm wired. I have my own website: www.stompflat.com. Unfortunately, a claim jumper grabbed my original domain name gojira.com. Do you surf? Yes. Oh ... you mean the Web? No. Not often. I'd need a jumbotron to do that. And keyboards have always been a problem for me. My claws are more suitable for slashing and disembowelling. I'm all thumbs with a QWERTY board. copyright © Mark Brownell 2000 |
