suede put themselves on the map by being one of the very first (so called) britpop bands. suede's music is guitar-pop, but with attitude and style: they picked up where bowie and bolan left off when glam-rock fizzled out in the mid seventies. also in the footsteps of bowie and bolan, suede's frontman, brett anderson, has a sexual ambiguity rivaled only by placebo's brian molko, though brett does it with far more class!
so what makes suede britpop, and not second wave glitter?
glitter was all about image. . .*all* about image. suede's music goes deeper than that. one of the things that makes britpop unique is that it offers commentary on everyday life and issues from a working-class point of view, while at the same time transcending it, making it beautiful (also see pulp). suede does this with rarely witnessed skill. despite suede only having put out four studio albums since 1993, they have changed the face of pop forever (whether or not it shows in todays world of robbie williams and cyber-madonna).
