why pulp? |

pulp is, in my (correct) opinion, one of the greatest bands ever.
a friend (the friend who got me into pulp, in fact) once told me that all their songs are about sex with girls and teenage hooligans. to a point he was very right; pulp's music is true to its britpop genre by being packed full of everyday-life type situations. the commentary made by pulp is often quite serious, depite its pop presentation. take a quick look at the classic 'common people:' the song is about a rich girl who wants to act like a working class person because she thinks it's chic. the narrator's advice to her: |
'rent a flat above a shop, cut your hair and get a job. smoke some fags and play some pool. pretend you never went to school . . . youll never fail like common people, youll never watch your life slide out of view' |

funny, isn't it? well, yes and no. superficially it's quite funny: the whole idea of the anecdote is a bit silly, but try looking at it again. what do you see? come on! look a little harder. . . bit more. . . almost there. . . yes!! youve got it!! it's truth!! what youre seeing (perhaps for the first time) is truth! the life of a 'common person' is shite, and wanting to live that life in order to be fashionable is bollocks. 'well, i already knew that,' you say. well, think about it again, is that your life up there? how do you feel about the way you live? score: jarvis: 1, you: 0.
but beyond the lyrics, pulps music is unlike anything else around today. their songs are arranged in a totally unique way; pulp manages to have their own distinct sound whilst keeping each song a singualr work of art. in addition, the music has depth and personality that other bands can only dream about. pulp manages to transcend guitar-based pop and place themselves in a different class.*
and anyway, people who dont like pulp are either too thick to get it or jealous that jarvis is smarter than they are. so there. |
