Northwest Lower Michigan is the top in-state destination for snowmobilers, beating out all locations in the Upper Peninsula and northeastern Lower Michigan, according to a 1996 snowmobiling survey conducted by Michigan State University for the state Department of Natural Resources.

Snowmobiling has become a $1- billion-a-year business in Michigan, according to Christine Jourdain of the American Council of Snowmobile Associations, an East Lansing-based agency representing 27 state snowmobile associations from Maine to California, including 2,500 individual snowmobile clubs and more than 1.5 million snowmobilers.
