"Forever This Way"

Part One

Captain Kathryn Janeway walked down the corridor of the Starship Voyager, but her mind was far from the thoughts of her ship. It had been almost two weeks since her and Chakotay had confessed their true feelings for each other and he was never far from her mind.

She still couldn't believe that after four years together on Voyager, she and Chakotay now had a relationship based on more than work. She was still a bit surprised every time he looked over at her, knowing that they shared a secret that no one else knew, and when they were alone and he leaned over to kiss her, she still felt the apprehensiveness in the back of her mind; she was not yet used to opening up to someone, and letting someone else into her thoughts, and heart.

None of the crew knew about their relationship yet, at least she didn't think so. She and Chakotay had been careful not to show that anything had changed between them, but on a ship this small, it was bound to become public soon enough. She was just coming from engineering, and was on her way to the bridge, when she heard a voice coming from behind her.

"Captain?"

She snapped out of her thoughts and turned to see Ensign Wildman behind her."Samantha, what can I do for you?", she asked. She and Samantha Wildman had become good friends since their arrival in the Delta Quadrant, and she was fond of her daughter, Naomi.

"I'm throwing, well, actually Neelix is throwing a birthday party for Naomi's fifth birthday, and I was wondering if you would be able to make it?"

"Five years old. She's growing so fast.", she paused "I wouldn't miss it! When is it?" she asked.

"Tomorrow, on Holodeck two. Neelix has something big planned, I can tell. He's been working on it all day. If you see Commander Chakotay, will you tell him that it would be nice if he could join us?' she asked

Captain Janeway nodded "Yes I will" she assured.

"Well I'd better go, I have a lot of work to do. I'll see you tomorrow." she turned and walked away.

Captain Janeway turned and started back toward the bridge. She was almost certain that she saw a flicker of a smile on Samantha's face when she mentioned Chakotay's name. It must have been her imagination.

As she walked through the doors leading to the bridge, Ensign Harry Kim spoke;

"Captain on the bridge"

"At ease. Commander, can I see you in my ready room?' she asked and could see the curiosity on his face already. She walked over to the door and they both walked inside. He walked over to the chair in front of her desk and sat down. She took the chair opposite to him. "What are you doing tomorrow?" she asked and could see a smile spreading across his face.

"That depends on what it is you want me to do, because I had plans to meet a beautiful woman in her quarters, and I would hate to disappoint her" he said teasingly.

"Well I'm certain that this 'beautiful woman' wouldn't mind, because I'm supposed to give you a message that you're invited to a certain young lady's fifth birthday party tomorrow." she answered smiling.

"Oh I don't know how well that's going to go over, put off for a younger woman"

"Ha, very funny. Samantha Wildman asked me to ask you if you would be able to make it to Naomi's birthday party tomorrow, so I told her that I would make sure that you got the message."

"Of course I'll go. Are you going? He asked.

"Yes" she answered. "But you know, it's in the afternoon, so you can still meet that 'beautiful woman' in her quarters later."

"I never thought of that. Twenty-one hundred hours seems like a good time don't you think?' he asked, smiling at her.

"Perfect" she replied.

"I must go and let her know, excuse me" he said, and walked out of her ready room. She wondered what he was up to now. She smiled to herself, and slowly got up from her desk and walked out the door. When she sat down at the command area, Chakotay, handed her a data pad.

She took it and read it, "I'll meet you tomorrow, in your quarters at Twenty-one hundred hours" it said, she smiled and looked at him. "All right," she said out loud, surprising him, and every other member of the bridge crew with her sudden statement, and turned to her science consol and went to work.

Kathryn Janeway was in her quarters, making sure that everything was set for the evening. She wasn't expecting Chakotay for another hour, so she decided to go and take a bath. It had been a busy day; there was a malfunction with the transporters, and they had to be taken off line while the repairs were being made, and of course, Naomi's birthday party.

At the party, each person had been assigned a table with three other people, and she had been put with Tom, B'elanna, and Chakotay. She suspected that Neelix or Samantha had set it up so that she would be seated next to him. Evidently, their discretion with each other had not worked.

Kathryn walked into the bathroom, and turned on the water for her bath. She undressed, and pinned up her hair and stepped into the hot, soapy water. As she lay back in the tub, she noticed a piece of clothing, not her own, thrown carelessly in the corner, and she smiled to herself, remembering the last time Chakotay had been there. She closed her eyes, and got lost in her thoughts just as her comm badge beeped.

Damn, she thought, now what. "Janeway here"

"Kathryn, are you busy?'

It was Chakotay. She smiled as she heard his voice fill the air. "What do you mean are you busy?" she asked, trying not to show the amusement in her voice.

"I mean what are you doing?" he asked.

"I'm taking a bath" she said, "why do you want to know?" she asked teasingly.

"Well, I was just sitting here, staring at the wall, wondering what you were doing, so I decided that I would satisfy my curiosity, and just ask." he replied.

She smiled. She knew perfectly well what he was up to, and he knew that too, but she decided to play along. "Well you know, I was just thinking about the last time that I was in the bath tub. By the way are you missing a sock?

"Now that you mention it, I was looking for my favorite pair of socks this morning, and could only find one. I was wondering where the other one went to. Do you think I could come over and get it?" he asked innocently. "I won't look, I promise"

"Well. As long as you promise." she answered. She didn't hear any response, but she heard the door to her quarters opening. The door to the bathroom swished open, and revealed Chakotay's smiling face. "So I had to come over to get a sock, just so you would let me in." he asked, looking at her.

"Hey, you promised you wouldn't look." she said.

"I just couldn't help myself" he said, and walked over to the tub. He knelt down beside it and picked up a sponge and started washing her back. She turned her head and flicked water at him with her hand. "Look, now you're wet." she said.

"We'll just have to do something about that now, won't we." he said. He placed the sponge on the side of the tub, and pulled his shirt over his head. Her hands wondered to his bare chest, and she pulled him closer and kissed him. For a moment, he pulled away and said, "Haven't we been through this already? .", and returned the kiss.* * * * * * * * * *

Kathryn opened her eyes, and looked around and saw at the end of the hall was a closed door. She had to get to that room, it had to be finished. She turned and started to walk toward it, but he blocked her path. It was Justin, "No" she screamed, but nothing came out. She looked again, but he was gone, now Daddy stood there. She tried to get by, he was blocking her, but she had to get in there, something was calling her, "Daddy, move" she tried to say, but again nothing. Then he was gone, like her, surrounded in darkness as she fell into eternal blackness. "Nooooo."

Kathryn opened her eyes, and looked around the room. She was no longer in the hall, but safe in the arms of her lover.

"Kathryn, what's wrong?", came Chakotay's groggy voice.

"Nothing," she said, not sounding to convincing. "Nothing's wrong, I just need to get some water. I'll be back in a minute." she said, slipping out from his arms. She walked out into the other room, and over to the replicator. She took the glass of water that materialized before her, and as she was walking to the sofa, the ship jolted, like she had never felt before. She went flying through the air, as did her glass, and when she landed on the floor, she heard something crack, then she felt the pain.

"Damn it" she said, out loud. Chakotay came stumbling out of the bedroom.

"What the hell was that" he said, but then he saw Kathryn laying on the floor, holding her leg. "Kathryn" he said moving to her side. He ordered the lights on, and they flickered stubbornly, before coming to full power. He looked at Kathryn's leg, and saw that one of the bones had made its way through the skin, and was protruding, spilling blood into her hand.

"We have to get you to sickbay, Computer, emergency beam out to sickbay" he said, but nothing happened. "Chakotay to bridge" he said. Surprisingly, it was B'Elanna's voice who answered back. "Torres here"

"B'Elanna, I need an emergency beam out to sick bay, but something is wrong with the transporters." he said.

"We came in contact with a massive ion field, and it knocked out most of the systems" she answered.

"How long until they're back online?" he asked, "the Captain's been injured, and I need to get her to the doctor." he said.

"We're still assessing the damage" she answered back, knowing that it was not what he wanted to hear.

"Fine, Chakotay out" he said. "I guess we're just going to have to get you to Sickbay some other way." he said to Kathryn. He bent over her, and put one arm under her legs, trying not to inflict any more pain then he had to, but it didn't work; she moaned in pain as he slid his other arm under her arms. She was losing a lot of blood, and already there was a puddle where she had been laying. He lifted her up, and made his way over to the door, "You know, they're going to wonder why we were together, in the middle of the night, in our pajamas" he said smiling at her. She smiled back through the pain, "I guess our secret is out" she said.

Chakotay walked out through the door of her cabin, and saw a bustle of activity in the corridors, There were teams fixing panels on the wall, and other officers helping injured friends to Sickbay, the majority also still in pajamas. When they walked through the doors, he saw that The Doctor already had his hands full, treating other injuries, but before Chakotay could speak, Tom Paris noticed him in the doorway."Doc, over here"he said, already on his way to them. "Put her here" he said motioning to an empty bed.

"Well what happened here" The doctor said, as Paris started scanning Kathryn's leg.

"She fell," he answered, but before the doctor could continue, Lieutenant Tuvok's calm voice filled the Sickbay, "Tuvok to Captain Janeway"

"The Captain is not available at the moment, can I help you with something?" Chakotay asked.

"We just received a distress call from a planet not far from here. They claim that their colony was attacked, and they need assistance. Requesting orders." he said.

Chakotay looked over at Kathryn, who nodded her head, just as The Doctor did something that made her cry out in pain."set a course for the planet, Mr. Tuvok, warp seven." He turned his attention back to Kathryn, who sat, starring at him. He gave her a sympathetic smile, and walked over and took her hand. First the transporters, then the ion field, now this, and it wasn't even morning. What else could go wrong, he asked himself, as The Doctor was finishing on Kathryn's leg.
