Note: This is a response to the challenge I issued to write a story that includes Frank, Rachel and a baby. However, I’ve also incorporated a challenge from a Star Trek friend of mine: To use the first sentence in a story.

Oh Baby!

"Ya know the talk we had? Well, I'm pregnant."

Head flew up, paper went left, coffee mug fell to the floor...and Frank Holloway nearly had a coronary.

"Frank?" no response. "Breathe."

Rachel Goldstein stared at her partner, a look of mock concern on her face. Bending down, she picked up the broken pieces of the coffee mug, strewn around the desk. "Say something." she said, once again looking his way.

Frank's eyes widened and he shrugged his shoulder. "A baby?" he asked, without thinking. "I mean, you're having a baby?" he said, as if the idea of Rachel having a child was completely out of this world.

Rachel rolled her eyes. "Yeah Frank. What, you thought David popped out a 10 year old?" she joked.

"Hell..." Frank sighed, and moved to sit down.

"Yeah I know..." she whispered, and flopped down beside him. "I can't believe this is happening." she said quietly, running her hand through her dark brown hair.

"What are we gonna do?" he asked, staring at an imaginary spot along the wall.

"We? What do you mean we?" she asked, "I'm the one who's...pregnant."

"I mean..." he stumbled.

"I can't have a baby Frank." Rachel continued, ignoring him. " I mean, I have work, and David, and work..."

"You said that already."

"Shut up Holloway." she continued. "It’s just not a good time." she said, pacing.

Frank looked up. "Shouldn’t you have thought of that before..."

"Shit Frank, I didn't do it on purpose." she warned, her blue eyes blazing.

"I know sorry. I wasn't thinking." he apologized.

"You never think."

"I do so...sometimes" he shot back

"You're such a pig Holloway." she yelled.

"Hey, what's going on in there?" Senior Sergeant Helen Blakemore said, looking in around the corner. "I can hear you all the way downstairs."

Rachel shot a look at Frank, and then Helen. "Nothing" they answered in unison.

"Yeah, right. Jeff wants to see you two in his office." she answered. "And try not to kill one another" she warned, and turned away.

Rachel stood for a moment looking at Frank, who in turn stood watching her. "We'd better go." she said softly, and walked to the door.

"Hey Rach?"

She turned back. "Yeah?"

Frank smiled at his partner, and best friend. "You'll get through it." he said. "I promise."

Rachel looked back at her friend and smiled. "You coming?"

"Yeah, be there in a tick." he answered and watched her walk away. Frank bent down to pick up the last piece of his broken coffee mug, and placed it back on his desk. A memento, he thought, of the day that would forever change their lives. He smiled, a bit sadly, at the thought of Rachel having a baby. He'd promised she would get through this, and he was certain everything would work out for the best. His only wish was that the baby that grew inside her, was his own.
