Someday

By: Kathryn Murphy
April 1998

What a day!

Kathryn Janeway walked down the corridor toward her quarters, her hand rubbing her left shoulder. Every now and then, a crewman would pass by, and acknowledge her with a nod, but she didn't have the ambition to nod back.

She was so tired; all she wanted to do was get into a nice hot bath, and soothe her aching muscles in the water. She had been working in engineering for the past two hours, with Seven, and before that, there had been a malfunction of one of the bioneural gel packs, which had caused problems in various systems, which in turn set back the days' work. Whoever thought that being a Captain meant no more dirty work, was gravely mistaken, and she would challenge anyone who thought as much, if she wasn't so damn tired.

But now she was on her way to her quarters, where she could relax. She came to the door, and opened her mouth to enter her authorization, but to her surprise, the door opened.

"Hi Kat, I was beginning to think that you got lost on your way home!" came a voice from inside.

It took her a moment to realize who it was coming from, "Hi," she said, and walked over and kissed her husband on the cheek. "I told you that I was going to be late tonight, but if you had listened to me this morning you would have known that!" she said jokingly.

"Hey, that's not fair, I was distracted." Chakotay said.

"Sure." she said, and walked into the bedroom. "I'm going to take a shower, OK?"

"Ya. Are you hungry?" he asked.

"A little." she said.

"O.K. we'll eat here tonight."

"Fine with me." she said. She stepped into the shower, and let the hot water fall over her shoulders. Then she heard a chime at the door. She turned the water off, and stepped out, wrapping herself in a towel, and arrived a moment later in her robe.

The little girl was standing by her Keeling husband as he listened intently at her story.

". . . and then we made these." she said, holding something for him to see. She turned her head, and her eyes brightened. "Mommy, look what I made." she yelled, as she flung herself into her mother's arms. "It's my hands."

"Look at this." she said, starring at the clay impression of her daughter's hands.

"It's for you" the little girl said.

"Thank you sweetheart, I'll hang it in my office so I can see it every day" she said, pushing her daughter's long blond hair behind her ears.

"I have to go now, because lanna's taking me and Brandon to the park. Bye Mommy and Daddy." she said and took off with B'Elanna and her son down the corridor.

"Sara is just like her mother, she can never sit still!" Chakotay said, smiling. "At least she gets it honest!"

"Maybe, but I can't ever remember being that energetic." she said, getting up from her knees.

"I can't believe that." he said, walking over to her, "I remember you telling me something about playing tennis, and swimming in the caverns on Mars." he said, wrapping his arms around her waist and moving her around the room.

"Oh, that was when I was young, and careless." she said, laughing.

He kissed her on the lips, "Hey, we're still young," he said, "so lets be careless together." He pulled her even closer, and placed his lips over hers, kissing her passionately.

And then she woke up.

Kathryn Janeway walked down the corridor, on her way to the bridge, when she heard a voice behind her. "Hey Kat, wait up" and saw Chakotay running to catch up. "You must be still half asleep!" he said.

"Why?" she asked, slightly embarrassed.

"Because I just called you twice. Didn't you hear me?" he asked.

"No, sorry. I guess I'm a bit distracted this morning." she said.

"Why?"

"Well I had a dream last night." she responded. and stepped in the waiting turbolift, as the two other occupants made room for them.

"Was it a bad one?" he asked, stepping in next to her.

"No, not bad, it just got me thinking." she said.

"What was it about?" he asked.

"I'll tell you someday." she said, smiling, as the turbolift doors closed in front of them.
