because those gifts would have made me burst into tears.
We had the bologna sandwiches for supper
and lime koolaid in honor of Christmas.
Then we all got down on our knees
for a new thing Mom had started
called "devotions"
where we each had to say a prayer.
I wasn't too crazy about it
because half the time I couldn't think of anything to pray about
and because Mom prayed about everybody we ever knew
or heard of.
And even about the weather!
...
But I did good this time.
I prayed a thank you for my new toys.
Finally Mom got done
and me and the boys jumped up, ready to go outside
but Daddy stopped us.
"Sit down," he said
"We're having a family meeting".
...
That's when we found out that Daddy was quitting the railroad
and that we were moving to Phoenix
so that he could go to school to learn to be a preacher.
Little did Mom know she wouldn't see snow again for 10 years.
And little did I know we would never have such a wonderful
Christmas
again.
Our Daddy
