IN THE BEGINNING

When we lived in Pittsburgh

we went to church

if Mom felt like it.

...

Mostly she didn't.

So we went to the matinee

instead.

Gramma lived there

and aunts and uncles and cousins

We all had Sunday dinner together

and Tudaddy let me dunk my bread in his coffee.

We were happy. Life was good.

...

I took the name of the Lord in vain

when I was four

I said to Mom

Where are my g--d--- undershirts?

Mom laughed

and told the story to everyone.

And all my uncles laughed and slapped their knees.

Mom laughed a lot and sang a lot

and banged pots and pans in the kitchen when she cooked

and stayed in bed late in the morning.

She loved to be lazy.

...

Daddy worked on the railroad

and hurried home every night

so he and Mom could smooch.

...

None of us had ever heard

of the Lord's Army.

...

We were just folks.

So why would God call on us?
