PHOENIX

VALLEY OF THE SUN

A man from the Maricopa Meat Packing Plant

where Daddy was going to work

as a night watchman

picked us up at the train station

and took us to our new home.

Four rooms

Living, kitchen, two small bedrooms

all painted gray.

Wide plank boards for floors

painted gray.

Not a curtain or a rug

so our voices echoed in the empty grayness.

. . .

"Something stinks!"

Jimmy said, holding his nose.

"Nobody's lived here in quite a while"

the man said

grabbing his hat and hurrying out.

Lizards roamed the walls

which felt slimy to the touch.

Ants and spiders nested.

Roaches roamed the kitchen.

It was a horrible house.

Daddy ran out to the store

and got bug spray

and poured it into the sprayer

and opened all the windows

and went around shoving the handle in and out, in and out

spraying the walls and floors and the ceiling.

Mom just stood there

watching him

and saying "Oh my goodness" over and over.

Wes followed Dad around

watching him spray

and asked, "How long are we going to stay here, Daddy?"

And Daddy said, "Two years."

That was bad news.

Finally Mom got going.

She found a bucket and some dried up soap under the sink

and tore up some old undershirts

and we got down to the business

of cleaning.

We cleaned the cots we would sleep on

and the closet where we would hang our clothes

and the kitchen

which had grease stains and water stains and where all the drawers

were home to roaches

that ran all over the wooden counter.

Mom and I were scared to death of them.

. . .

I was sick at heart and in my stomach

all day long.

. . .

That night we had crackers and peanut butter for supper

and Mom said we could sleep in our underwear

because she was too dizzy to unpack.

For devotions, Daddy gently took the Bible out of Mom's trembling hands

away from her teary eyes

and he read to us

"I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help".
