One Sunday after church
I sprawled on my stomach, arms and legs akimbo
and watched Mom in the mirror.
She dipped a pad in the jar of cold cream
and wiped her makeup off.
Then she reached back
brought up her brown curls
and tied them in a knot.
"What are you doing, Mom?"
I asked.
"You look like a baby!"
"I have always been a vain woman", Mom said.
"What I look like has mattered too much in my life.
So I am closing that chapter".
I felt scared
alone
abandoned.
Mom couldn't be a Mom
if she looked like a baby!
She turned around and saw the look on my face
and said, "I'm doing this for the Lord, honey.
Don't be scared".
That was the first time I realized
that our life was changing.
