ARIZONA

Mom got sick

and coughed and coughed.

So we moved to the Gila desert

for her sake.

I missed the Pittsburgh people.

But after a while they visited

and we all laughed together

like we used to.

I met Jeannie in first grade.

She was a really bad girl.

She stole money from her Mother's purse

so we could buy lime popsicles.

I thought she was brave beyond words!

But I wouldn't steal from Mom

because Daddy would probably get out the pink hairbrush

to teach me a lesson.

Mom wanted me to be best friends with the twins

Bonnie and Connie.

But I didn't want to.

They were younger than me to start with

and not near as interesting as Jeannie.

On Sundays we still went to the matinee

and Daddy said, walking along holding hands with Mom

"We are such a handsome and wonderful family!"

And me and the boys were proud.

Daddy still worked on the railroad

and hurried home every night

so he and Mom could smooch.

One Sunday Mom went to church

with the twins' Mom and Dad.

Daddy was crabby about it

and wouldn't fix us any breakfast.

The next Sunday Mom went again.

And the Sunday after that

she made me and Jimmy and Wes

get up and get dressed

and go to church.

Daddy said he wasn't going

because Sunday was the only day

he got to sleep in.

But the next Sunday

Daddy got up and got dressed

and went to church.

...

We didn't know then

that God was in charge.
