A SCARY MAN

Daddy was gone all the time.

He went to school

he went to work

he went to bed.

* * *

We missed him singing and whistling

about a lady who was nothing

but a rag, a bone, and a hank of hair.

because it made us laugh.

We missed Mom singing too.

As soon as Daddy was done

she would chime in

and sing about how

"There came to her window one morning in spring

A dear little robin who came there to sing".

* * *

But Daddy didn't have time to sing

and Mom didn't feel like it.

She took to sleeping on the couch

because she couldn't sleep good anymore

without Daddy.

* * *

One night I heard a noise.

It sounded like Mom

choking or crying.

I kicked my way out of the mosquito netting

hurried to the doorway

to look into the living room.

* * *

Mom was on the couch

and a man was standing over her

one knee on her stomach

one leg on the floor

his hand covering her mouth

and he was taking off his belt.

* * *

I was frozen. I could not move.

I had pins and needles all over my body.

I thought he was going to hit Mom with his belt

and hurt her

and make her cry.

She saw me standing there

and told me with her eyes to get back to bed.

But I was frozen.

I couldn't move.

I couldn't think what to do.

* * *

"Oh God Oh God", I prayed silently

"Help us help us".

Tippie came right through the screened door

like a yellow rocket

and grabbed ahold of the man's leg

down near the ankle

and blood spurted

and the man screamed

and tried to beat Tippie off his leg

with his hand

then with Mom's Bible

that was on the coffee table.

* * *

Tippie held on until the man ran out

screaming

cussing

leaving a trail of blood on Mom's new scatter rug

and a hunk of flesh on the porch.

Mom got the boys settled down and back to bed.

Then the two of us laid down together on the couch

but neither one of us slept

because we were shaking and scared.

* * *

When Daddy got home at sunrise

he held Mom close in his arms

like she was his baby.

He cried.

* * *

He skipped school that day.

* * *

After that, Tippie slept on the floor by the couch

or by Mom's bed

wherever she decided to sleep.

He never left her side until Daddy got home.

* * *

And we started to have devotions

right after he got home from school

so that Daddy could take the time

to pray.
