MY LAST DAY WITH VERA

Mom and Daddy had to drive to Shreveport

to go to the church conference.

They would be gone for two days.

Sister Alfreda took all four of us kids.

Sister Alfreda's husband

didn't come to our church

so he said we could call him Mr. Gary

since he didn't like that brother-sister stuff.

Wes got a big kick out of that

since he didn't like it either

so they called each other Mr. Gary and Mr. Wes.

Then their son Joey chimed in

and Jimmy

and they were all going around hollering

Mr. Wes Mr. Gary Mr. Joey Mr. Jimmy.

I escaped to the kitchen

where Sister Alfreda was making supper

and she let me dip the chicken

into the egg bowl, then the flour bowl

and put it in the skillet.

Her kitchen was pretty.

It had flowery wallpaper

and a big window over the sink

and lots of counters.

Also a cutting board

which I had never seen before

where she was chop-chopping

cucumbers and tomatoes

and onions

and ripping up lettuce

and mixing them all together

in a big wooden bowl

and I asked

"What do you call that, Sister Alfreda?"

and she said

"It's called Chef Salad."

It was so delicious!

We never had lettuce

and tomatoes only if someone left some off on the porch

and Mom didn't have a cruet

to mix oil and vinegar in.

Sister Alfreda loved us

and petted us

and Mr. Gary went to the store

and got a bunch of candy

and divided it up evenly

and the baby behaved himself real well.

I really enjoyed being with Sister Alfreda.

It was my first time to know another lady

up close.

She was kind and happy and she didn't mind the mess

the boys and the baby made of her house.

She just cleaned it up.

The next day Sister Alfreda told me that she had a surprise

for me.

Vera was coming over to spend the whole day with me!

Oh we had a good time!

We sneaked back to our house

and had it all to ourselves

and we made fudge.

There wasn't enough cocoa left in the can

even with Vera beating on it with a spoon

to get the last little bitty crumbs

and it took a long time

to get to the soft ball stage

but in the end it wasn't too bad.

We ate most of it ourselves

but we did put a few pieces on a plate

for the boys.

Vera could always think up interesting things to do!

We played hopscotch at Sister Alfreda's

and she won like always

because I was a bad thrower

and my stone always fell outside the lines

no matter how good of a stone I found.

Her Daddy came by to pick her up

just before supper

and we were giggling

and we couldn't stop

so he got out of his truck

and visited with Sister Alfreda and Mr. Gary

while me and Vera pinched our noses to stop the laughing.

Daddy and Mom came by to get us

after supper

and me and the boys all tried to talk at once

about the good time we had

at Sister Alfreda's house.

Mom put the baby down to bed

and then Daddy called a family meeting.

"We are going to move"

Daddy said

"to Winnsboro, Louisiana."

He went on

to say that it was a great opportunity

from the Lord

because it was a larger church

in a larger town

and he didn't have much choice

but to take it.

I heard all that

but I was dead.

My heart had stopped.
