1955 The Aida was performed in “revised’ setting with projection by the busy Kerz. The vast figure of a sphinx projected tin the Temple Scene was a notable artistic addition. The Triumphal Scene was less gaudy and gala than usual; more modern, rather, and stylized. The effect was neat and imposing, but there’s a good deal to be said for old-fashioned pomp in this context. 1969 There was a new production of Aida, absent for six years, while it lined up behind other candidates for new sets. Skalicki’s sun-bathed, clean-lined show (based on memories of a trip to Egypt and researches into Egyptian art) was conceived on a huge if not weighty scale. Crowd scenes stretched from pit to Franklin Street, and heavenward, too. A characteristic Egyptian monumentality was stressed – suggesting by the way, the pitiful fragility of characters caught under the relentless tread of governmental conformity, which seems particularly uptight by today’s standards. |

Reviews The Times quoted an OP person - the new head? - as frankly
admitting that the company had been - or is still - close to
"dissolution" or some such. I forget the exact word. As a further cost
cutting measure, they've scrapped what was to be a new production of "Aida," by the Zandra Rhodes of the "Pearlfishers" just at NYCO and soon to be at San Francisco. I forget where this replacement "Aida" will come from./ Source |
