"Far too stylised," was the only adverse comment heard as a stunned but enthusiastic capacity audience streamed out of Britain's largest theatre after Canadian Opera's Festival offering.

Style was certainly the right word for a production that used Stravinsky's Symphony of Psalms oratorio as a prologue to his tense, doom-laden opera Oedipus Rex.
