1960 Evans, pale-faced in drab fatigues, sang the title role and was enormously sympathetic as a poor clod who walked the stage with the heaviness of a man who is crushed just a little more each day. The haunting pathos of his beaten, plaintive voicing of Berg and Buchner’s trampled man doesn’t leave the memory easily. Some of the less even-keel characters in Wozzeck resemble puppets of a contorted world, and the lethargy of Evans’ step heightened the resemblance. So did the creaky jerkiness of Richard Lewis superbly etched Captain. A plain black curtain was lowered for scene changes and these were executed with a nearly cinematic speed. The production, in sum, looked like something from the most stylish legitimate theater. Wozzeck Data Base |

Baumgarten is one of the few producers who will read a libretto carefully, then transform it from another era to the present demonstrating the timelessness of themes and problems. |
