A WALK BETWEEN TWO HEARTS-16

PART 16

Nikita stood silently in front of Madeline’s desk, her blue eyes taking in her stiff movements. In all the years of her being in Section, Nikita couldn’t recall seeing Madeline looking so obviously stressed. This was a woman who was referred to by many Operatives as the Ice Queen, and this Ice Queen looked like she was having a meltdown.

You’ll be leaving tonight on a plane bound for Canada. There you will be given more information on your mission. Simone will be meeting you at main access in 10 minutes. Madeline pushed a panel to across the glass top desk towards Nikita and sat back, her slender legs crossing gracefully.

Nikita looked down at the panel and then picked it up.

There is vital information you’ll need to know when the right time comes up. I will let you know the code then.

Madeline folded her fingers together, placing them on her lap, giving Nikita a dismissing look.

Placing the panel into the pocket of her leather jacket, Nikita slipped her dark glasses onto her nose and snapped her gum as she turned to leave, unaware of the scowl now spread across Madeline’s usually impassive face.

Simone sat silently on the plane, her face drawn and tired looking. Her usual aloofness she had displayed with Nikita was gone, replaced by sullen silence.

Nikita studied her covertly, concerned with her behaviour. Missions were not a good time to let personal thoughts and problems get in the way, and being the level 7 she is, Nikita figured Simone should know better. Sipping her water, she returned her attention to some intel on some new weapons Walter had given her.

Suddenly, Simone got to her feet, hand over her mouth and disappeared into the bathroom, the door making a loud slamming sound.

Setting the panel down, Nikita got to her feet and approached the door. A soft retching sound could be heard plainly through the thin door and Nikita immediately felt her senses go on high alert.

Simone? Are you all right? She called tapping lightly on the door with her knuckles. More retching was the only answer she got so she stood back, deciding to wait until she came out.

Moments later, the door opened and Simone emerged, hands shaking, and looking exhausted. Nikita helped her to her seat, kneeling in front of the young woman, forgetting her personal feelings for her for the time being. What’s wrong?

Simone pulled her hand from under Nikita’s and leaned back in her chair, hand over her stomach, her soft dark eyes closing.

Nothing. Go back to your seat Nikita. Simone’s voice was surprisingly firm as she continued to deep breathe.

When she didn’t move right away, Simone opened her eyes and looked down at her and leaned forward, her face becoming almost hard. Go back to your seat. She repeated in a slow deliberate tone. Nikita swallowed and got to her feet, her hands in her pockets.

Okay, don’t tell me, but I need to know if you can do this mission.

Simone crossed her legs and swung her chair around, bringing her back to Nikita. You don’t need to know anything. Sit the fuck down.

Nikita cocked her eyebrow up, her temper flared at Simone’s rudeness but did as she was told, leaving her to her own misery.

Michael lay down on the couch in the house’s main sitting room, unable to bring himself to go upstairs. Sleep wouldn’t come easily especially after today’s events. Closing his eyes for a moment, he was haunted by the sight of Ops grabbing Simone, half naked on his lap, taunting him with riddles. The sight of Tristan, his son, a son thought long ago dead. The sight of Nikita as he had kissed her goodbye in the parking area of Section, the haunted look in her beautiful blue eyes. His stomach clenched painfully as did his heart. Section was going to kill him with all this being thrown at him at once.

What a choice to make,, glad ‘m not you

The ominous meaning behind Operations words clawed at his calm, forcing his eyes open again, muscles unable to relax. Frowning, he brought his hands up to his eyes, rubbing them tiredly as he stretched for the hundredth time in an attempt to relax himself. Outside the countryside it was quiet, the only sounds were the odd animal in the forests surrounding the property and the dripping of water from the eaves.

Michael ran his hands from his eyes down into his long curly hair, wishing it were Nikita’s hands. She was always able to calm him down when he got tense. He sighed quietly, his one hand rested on his hard flat stomach, the icy cold of his belt buckle under his palm. In his minds eye, he saw her laughing, her long blonde hair flying in the wind, her smile as she fed him toasted marshmallows on their camping trip not long ago. The feel of her up against him under the stars as they listened to the night, the smell of her hair under his nose. Touching her warm skin left him wild with desire as always. Giving a faint smile, Michael continued his thoughts of her. He loved the sound of her voice in his ear as they made love, the way she said his name… she made it sound so original, special.

Nikita…

He whispered her name, loving the sound of it on his lips. Just then, the image turned grey and the blonde haired beauty under him in his minds eye changed, morphing slowly into Simone. Sitting bolt upright, he swung his feet over onto the floor, holding his head in his hands.

Merde. He swore under his breath, shaking his head, and then laid back, legs stretched out in front of him. How he longed for Operations death. A slow death at that.
