PART 1
Are you in or out?
Those words rang over and over in her mind as she stood stoically in the darkened perch. She sighed, leaning forward on the ledge, her nails tapping underneath as she took in the activity below her. Section was running smoothly since he had left…
Nikita let out a soft snort at her thoughts.
Since he left.. It was more like since he abandoned her.
Frowning at her now angry and selfish thoughts, she dipped her head down and tried to reason with herself.
He didn’t abandon her; he did what they both knew he had to do. Raise Adam away from this place. Section had no place for children yet the idea of spending everyday and night apart from him for who knew how long was excruciating for her. Only the strong shoulder of Walter got her through many nights that she thought she wouldn’t be able to survive.
The loss of Michael was only compounded by the loss of her newly found father and the subsequent promotion to Operations that she now held. It was a job she took out of loyalty to her father, and her intense love of Michael.
She recalled the last moment with him at the train station. Only the hostile stare she had given her newly appointed bodyguards had allowed her a brief moment of respite before they parted. He had taken her in his arms, the rush of people around them faded away for just the one moment…. When he turned his head just enough to whisper in her ear,
I love you too.
It threatened to tear down what was left of her resolve yet at the same time; it gave her what she had longed for so long from him; the validation of his feelings. In all the years together, he had never once uttered those words she had prayed so hard and long to hear him say. Now he was gone, only, a few pictures, and the shirt he had left behind for her under her pillow.
Nikita straightened up, tucking her now shortened hair behind her one ear and retrieved one of the many panels piled on the ledge beside her waiting for her approval. The sound of his voice was as real and as strong as it was the 2 years since he had left. Two years of working non stop in an effort to forget what was missing in her life. There were times when she longed for the release of a bullet in her heart just to let her not feel the pain she had felt over losing him. Two years, he had not once attempted to get in touch with her nor could she find him despite the resources at her command. It was as if they had dropped off the edge of the planet. She smiled, seating herself down on the floor, knees pulled up balancing a panel. That was why he was the best Section had. The ability to disappear was an art form for him and she admired him for it despite the frustration she felt because of it.
The sound of footsteps coming up the staircase caught her attention and she looked up in time to see Jason enter, a disc in his hand.
Excuse me, may I talk to you?
He asked looking down at her on the floor.
Sure, come in.
Nikita got to her feet, pulling down her skirt that had hiked up far too high up her thighs.
Jason took a few steps in and held out the disc to her.
Nikita looked down at it and back to him, taking it from his hand.
What’s this?
She asked setting the panel she had been holding aside for the time being.
It’s a gene coded message. Last time I heard of these from my brother’s files. He got one from Adrian that was meant for Michael. I figured it was awfully important as it came in much the same way as the other.
Nikita frowned, twirling the disc in her hand.
And how did the other come in?
Jason hesitated for a moment, shifting his weight from one foot to the other.
Well?
She prodded feeling a little irritated by his silence.
Jason shifted his eyes from hers and managed to squeak nervously,
It came from the outside.
After sending Jason out under the threat of cancellation if he breathed a word of this, she hurried over to the wall computer, placing the disc in the small slot. Almost immediately, the disc requested gene confirmation. Placing her finger in the small indent, she felt a small prick indicating the sample of blood had been taken. Sucking the small droplet of blood from the tip, she stared intently at the small screen as it began the message inside.
Nikita.
It began, the calm impassive face of her beloved Michael stared back at her, his green eyes as mesmerizing as the day she met him. Her heart pounded furiously in her chest and she had to concentrate on her breathing as she listened to him.
I need to come in. It’s Adam, he is gravely ill.
He paused; his eyes cast downward, shocking Nikita as he brought his gaze back up. Much to her amazement, his eyes shimmered with unshed tears and his voice shook as he finished the message
He is dying…. There are no other options on the outside left for us.
Obviously embarrassed by his show of emotion, his entire stance changed, once more slipping fully into the operative she recalled, he ended the message.
I will contact you soon for your answer.
She blinked rapidly, her concern for Adam washed over her as well as at the prospect of seeing Michael again. Would he still love her as he professed he did or had he moved on, only contacting her because Section was his last hope?
