A TIME FOR EVERY PURPOSE

‘I can’t look back! I can’t look back!’ ran through his mind as he grasped Adam’s hand and walked away from the woman he loved. He knew if he looked back, he would never be able to leave her again! His mind was very clear with the idea that he had to take Adam somewhere so he could be safe and grow up knowing his father but his heart… His heart cried out at the thought of leaving Nikita again.

Steeling himself to be strong and walk away, he didn’t realize he was holding Adam’s hand too tight until Adam complained. “I’m sorry son!” he said to Adam as he loosened his hand and rubbed Adam’s fingers gently.

“Were are we going, Daddy? Are we going to find Mommy?”

Michael felt his heart ache for the innocent Elena. She had been a good woman and did not deserve what had been done to her. Then to be taken away from her child at such a young age! He shook his head. Kneeling down to Adam’s height, he said quietly, “Adam, your Mother is in heaven looking down on us. She is not coming back.”

“But why Daddy?” Adam exclaimed, tears threatening to spill, “You came back! Why can’t Mommy?”

Michael pulled his son in his arms and said, “One day I will explain what happened. Right now, I just want to get to know you again.”

Adam clasped his arms around his daddy’s neck and said, “I’m so glad you are here, Daddy!”

“Me too son, me too!” Michael said, knowing it was true even if he was leaving his heart behind in the hands of a woman who he had never been able to ignore.

Nikita watched as Michael knelt down to speak to Adam. She could see that Adam was about to cry and wondered what they were discussing. ‘Will Michael look back?” she questioned herself. ‘Don’t please!’ her mind screamed while her heart was begging to see his face one more time. She knew if he looked back, she would run to him and never let him go! That would be unfair to Adam. Adam needed to grow up in a safe environment with his father. She wanted to be selfish and demand he stay but she had let him go once for his own good and now he had to do it again for him and for Adam. ‘Will it ever be my turn?’ she thought to herself then sternly reprimanded herself, ‘Don’t be selfish, Nikita! Adam needs him!’ They would be together one day, she was sure of it.

Wiping the tears from her face, she turned to the bodyguards who were unobtrusively watching over her and nodded. They joined ranks and walked her to the limo that would take her back to Section One.
