Notes for WILLIAM ATTEY:

HISTORY OF NOVINGER, MO. PAGE NO. 4

In honor of the landowner, Mr. Green also said that he wanted to have a town named for himself, and decided that the first new town to be designated on the railroad west to be known as "Green City" in his honor. This was really the town father west or Green Castle, which had been town before the railroad was built. Mr. Green told Mr. Novinger that in this way those who came after them would remember them both.

Novinger's first venture in the mining of coal was made about 1878, or soon thereafter, when a shaft was sunk on the front street of Novinger, but too much water was encountered and the venture was abandoned, as formerly related in this history. Coalmines were opened and operated in the hill west of Novinger, at Danforth and Stahl, before any more coal mining activities were made in, or around the town. In 1890, the "O.K. Mining Co/" was organized by: I. F. Stroup; Noah Stroup; B. Stroup; Wm. Radcay and a Mr. Evans. They put down a shaft at the end of a hill bordering the O.K. railroad about a mile west of Novinger, on the farm of Hiram Novinger. They operated this mine and produced considerable amount of coal and shipped it on the railroad to nearby markets for four or five years, then sold it to a newly organized company known as the Rombauer coal company, owned by Major M. G. Rombauer, of St Louis, MO. The company was capitalized at $10,000. They then started to operate this mine, and it became known as Rombauer Mine No.1. Mr. Stroup the former owner who sold to Rombauer, told about when the first payday came around for the miners, Mr. Rombauer did not have enough cash on hand to meet the payroll, and actually borrowed the money from Mr. Stroup to pay it. This was due to the fact that the coal Mr. Rombauer had been selling he had not yet been paid for by the customers, but this condition soon changed, and the Rombauer Company in this respect encountered no further trouble. After a few years of successful operation of this mine, the company leased land up the Davis Creek Valley, and began to open up new mines, and in a few years, Rombauer Mines NO. 2, NO. 3, and NO. 4, were put in production, and then the Mine NO. 1, was closed down, and abandoned. About this time it was learned that an eastern firm offered Mr. Rombauer $30,000. For his mines and holding. But Mr. Rombauer turned the offer down. Thousands of tons of coal was produced, and shipped from these Davis Creek mines, until about 1912, when a new method of mining was put in operation at the mines NO. 3 and NO. 4. Up to this time the method of mining the coal was known as the "Room and Pillar" system, wherein the coal was taken out with pillars left to support the roof, and thus much coal was lost by not removing it.

The new method was known as the "Long-Wall" system, and electric mining machines were install in the mines to under-mine the coal so it could be loaded out of the mine. This method taken out all of the coal, and none was left.
