The hotel that we stayed at had an enclosed court yard, so we parked our vehicles in it at night after work for security. This became our motor pool area. |

TALL TALE TIME: The above two pictures were to give me the biggest pat on the back and a big "at a boy" and also start me on my road to ruin as the company photographer. Har!! After having returned to Camp USARTHAI I turned in the pictures to Lt. Turner. A few days later he called me in and said that after we had left the scene someone went in and stole all the side boards off the bridge and the Thai government had said that we hadn't completed the bridge. Lt Turner had showed them the picture of the completed bridge and the picture saved the day. It was proof that we had done the job. Because of this he decided to send me down to Sattihip to take pictures of the two trucks that 1st platoon had totaled out in an accident and also a picture of the brand new 2 1/2 ton multi-fuel truck which had been dropped from the ship onto the dock and totaled out. He also wanted pictures of the 1st platoon doing their thing at Samae San. I went down and took pictures as best I could and came back. I had great pictures of the trucks but when it came to what the guys were doing I bombed out!! They were not doing a thing. They were short material and were not involved in a single project. I tried to get some shots of people doing stuff but it didn't work out. When I got back and turned in the pictures, Lt Turner was furious. "I send you all the way down to Sattihip. What do I get? People sitting around on their ass!!!" I told him I can only take pictures of what I see. He dismissed me curtly. A couple days after having returned from the second trip to Roi Et, I was in a jeep with Pete Loria and Kolecke headed throught the mountains on our way to Sattihip. My career as a photographer was at an end, but I still took a hugh bunch of pictures while at Sattihip. |
