Starring: Brendan Fraser, Bridget Fonda, Whoopi Goldberg, Rose McGowan, Chris Kattan, Dave Foley. Voices: John Tututuro. Director: Henry Selick Writer: Sam Hamm Rated: PG-13 Runtime: 1 hour 39 minutes Year: 2001 Monkeybone is the latest film from the director of The Nightmare Before Christmas which is a kids movie that is not for the youngest, due to a whole lot of sex jokes, scary scenes, and nudity. It actually is pretty good if you can get past the sex-obsessed Monkeybone, an animated character whose name is even a sexual reference. The plot concerns Stu Miles (Brendan Fraser), a soon-to-be famous animator whose new cartoon Monkeybone has already become a huge hit. He has a beautiful girlfriend, sleep psychologist Julie McElroy (Bridget Fonda), and a hit show who his manager (Dave Foley) is obsessed with, moneywise. One night, when he wants to propose to Julie, he is in a car accident and goes into a coma. When he wake sup, he is in Downtown, a land where people collect nightmares, and his animated monkey (John Tututuro) lives. Determined to get out of there, he decides to cheat Death (Whoopi Goldberg) by stealing an exit pass and returning to Earth. Back in reality, three months have passed, and Julie uses "nightmare juice" to try and scare Stu awake. Unfortunately, Monkeybone decides that he doesn't want to be a monkey anymore and travels back to Earth in Stu's body, leaving Stu trapped in Downtown. With Monkeybone ruining Stu's life, Stu and Downtown resident Kitty (Rose McGowan) try to comprimise with Death to let him go back, even though she is still mad about the exit pass incident. She eventually agrees, being a softie for love, and sends him back in the body of a recently deceased gymnast (Chris Kattan), who is now an organ donor, to stop Monkeybone and win Julie back. Okay, now for what worked in the movie. First, Brendan Fraser was great as always, as is Whoopi Goldberg, who makes a memorable turn as Death. Bridget Fonda is okay, not really plying with her role that much, and Rose McGowan is good in a relatively small role. Chris Kattan is hilarious, but it is really nasty at the end, when his organs begin to fall out. The sets were fantastic and most of the characters were memorable. The problems, now: First and foremost, the movie was way too overloaded with sex jokes. Monkeybone's whole character was based on sex and it kind of got disguisting after a while. Second of all, for a kids movie, why in the world did Selick put in so many of the above as well as some really freakish nightmare scenes, which are guarenteed to scare children, as well as some adults. Besides these problems, I had a fun time. Even though the critics trashed it, if you are looking for a dark comedy which is good, thi one is right up your alley. **** stars --Cory Thompson |
