Starring: George Clooney, Matt Damon, Brad Pitt, Andy Garcia, Julia Roberts, Don Cheadle, Casey Affleck. Director: Steven Soderbergh Writer: Ted Griffin Studios: Warner Bros. Pictures, Village Roadshow Pictures Rated: PG-13 (for some language and sexual content) Runtime: 1 hour 55 minutes Year: 2001 Ocean's Eleven is one of the best movies I have seen this year. With a huge ensemble cast, loads of cameos (Joshua Jackson, Barry Watson, Shane West, Holly Marie Combs, Topher Grace and many others all appear), an Oscar winning director, and loads more, this movie certainly didn't disappoint. The movie follows Danny Ocean (George Clooney), who right after being let out of prison is planning another robbery scheme. But this is no normal robbery scheme. He wants to rob three of Las Vegas's biggest casinos, all owned by Terry Benedict (Andy Garcia), who is now dating his ex-wife Tess (Julia Roberts). He enlists the help of his old friend Dusty Ryan (Brad Pitt), who is currently teaching celebrities how to play poker. They eventually conclude that they need eleven skilled men to help them with the robbery, and helping them ironically is another casino owner, Ruben Tischkoff (Elliot Gould), who is angry at Terry for stealing away the casino business from him. The men they find are newcomer Linus Caldwell (Matt Damon), brothers Virgil and Turk Malloy (Casey Affleck & Scott Caan), the British Roscoe Means (Don Cheadle), Frank (Bernie Mac), Saul Bloom (Carl Reiner) and a few others, one of who includes a Chinese man who weighs 95 pounds and is one of the most flexible in the world. The rest of their time goes into planning the robbery, which will get them $160 million to split between 11 people. Even though Terry is suspecting something after he meets Danny at a dinner, he can hardly even detect the plan that is going on in his mind, which actually involves Tess, since he is trying to win her back. The night finally comes, and the mischevious plots start. The acting is great. Clooney, Pitt, and Garcia all turn in great performances, and Matt Damon and Don Cheadle are also very good. As for Julia Roberts, she has one of the smallest parts in the movie and only appears in a few scenes, especially around the end. The directing is superb, as well as the writing, and the music is perfect in all the right places. You can already smell Oscar on this great movie. ****1/2 stars --Cory Thompson |
