Mashpee (including New Seabury and Poppoonesset) has a unique history, firmly rooted in its Native American Wampanoag background. In 1660, Richard Bourne, bought a tract of land and promptly set it aside for Native Americans. Known as the "Mashpee Plantation", this was the first reservation in the United States. Today, Mashpee has experienced steady, sustained growth with a population of 7,400. |
