St. Croix is the southern most island in the US Virgin Islands. Christopher Columbus discovered St. Croix in 1493 and named it "Santa Cruz" (Holy Cross). The island was once the most prosperous sugar producing Danish colony in the West Indies. Today sugar is no longer refined, but stone sugar mills can be found throughtout the island (minus their windmills). The island is hilly and lush and being a part of the US, the roads and other infrastructure are some of the best in the Caribbean. |
