January 1 2003 | First arrivals of the new year and daily winter visitors - Blue Jay, White-breasted Nuthatch, Black-Capped Chickadee, Tree Sparrow, Hairy Woodpecker, Downy Woodpecker. |
January 3 2003 | Eight Mourning Doves feeding on the ground under the feeder. |
January 5 2003 | American Goldfinch - five on the feeder in winter plumage. |
January 9 2003 | Feeding birds scattered when a Northern Goshawk alighted in Maple tree 20 feet from the feeder. Very aggressive bird of prey, was constantly shifting its gaze but after about 10 minutes it decided to move on. Within a minute the feeder was again alive with Jays and Sparrows. |
January 16 2003 | Mid-morning saw a small hawk swoop over the feeder , then suddenly change direction, careening off the kitchen window. Laying spread-eagle in the snow just 1 foot below the window sill was a Sharp-shinned Hawk. Hurried out side to arrive just as the rather ruffled fellow regained its composure and rocketed past me. |
January 18 2003 | First European Starling of the year. Should mention that we have steady 'comings and goings' of at least 6 Black Squirrels. They come to base of our feeder then go back to the top of our attic ! |
January 19 2003 | A lonely Dark-eyed Junco (Slate-coloured) spent several hours feeding under the snow covered Juniper bushes that surround the base of the feeder. |
January 20 2003 | This morning I found the tracks left in the fresh overnight snow by a Timber Wolf as it patrolled along our old cedar fence line located a few yards behind the Thoughtful Spot. |
January 21 2003 | Around 2 pm had at least 30 Mourning Doves ground feeding, which explains why at 2.30 pm the Northern Goshawk had returned to the same Maple Tree overlooking the feeder. It knows a good thing when it sees it ! |
January 23 2003

This is literally a red-letter day
for the Thoughtful Spot. A pair of Northern Cardinals, for
only the second time in nearly 25 years, paid a welcomed visit to the feeder.

January 26 2003 | While putting the Birdcam to rest, was pleased to observe our resident White-Tailed Deer family, comprising a buck and two does, cautiously making their way to their bedding-down location in the Thoughtful Spot's small cedar thicket. |
