Knowing that about 85%-90% of the Hot Wheels distributed every year are simply repainted versions of previous year's models, I always been interested in only buying the new models issued for the first time each year. This became very easy in 1995 when Mattel realized this and named a series for the new models, the First Editions. Before 1995, it was always unclear exactly which cars were the new ones. I wanted to find checklists in the tradition of the current First Editions for each of the 27 years from 1968 through 1994. I thought that this would be very simple, but every checklist that I came across in books and on the internet either listed every single car issued each year including the repaints and variations, listed all of the cars by collector number, or alphabetically with no relation to which year they joined the lineup. I've gone over many list from many different sources, and found many disrepancies; but have come up with what I believe to be an accurate as possible listing of each new model issued each year. Also considering previous models that are given new names and repeating names for completely new models, there will always be room for debate on the accuracy of any such list; but this just a hobby, and can be used to simplify and organize any Hot Wheels collection.
