We are the Thunder Bay Astronomy Group (TBAG)

Founded in March 2004, we are a group of amateur astronomers who enjoy getting together as often as possible to view planets, the moon, the sun, comets, meteors, nebula, galaxies, D.S.O's, iridium flares, and pretty much any thing else you can possibly think of that can be found in our wonderful sky above.

One of the main points of this group is to make astronomy fun, interesting, educational and accessible to all.  Some members have telescopes, some have binoculars, some don't have anything at all, but all are welcome.  We are more then happy to share our equipment and allow those who don't have scopes or binoculars to enjoy the view through ours.  Another advantage to being a part of the group is that you get to preview each others scopes and accessories such as lenses and finder scopes, so that if you are thinking of purchasing something for yourself, you can at least give it a test drive first if another member has it.

We also like to get as involved as possible with the community at large and try to participate in any and all related community events (which include creating our own too!)  We organize regular star parties, sidewalk sessions and coffee shop meetings too.  Our star parties are usually held in dark locations away from the city and are strictly for getting some good quality observing done!  Sidewalk sessions are held in the city at a busy location and are more for trying to pick up new members and, to educate the general public.  The first Friday of every month is reserved for our Gabfest.  We meet at Tim Horton’s on Memorial Ave (Next to Swiss Chalet and Roxy's) and bring our books, magazines, laptops and other astro toys, to show of to each other.  We also use this time to discuss future plans for the group.

The group, however, is not completely about having fun and observing the sky.  We do have a more serious side and higher goals too.  We concern ourselves with light pollution issues, dark sky preserves, high school education and community and charity events.

As a member you are only expected to do one thing..... have fun!  You can do as little or as much as you want with the group and participate in whatever takes your fancy.  We do not have any solid rules, (but do practice certain courteous behaviour!) no fees, no boss or leader.  Everyone in the group is equal and there is no division between the knowledgeable and the beginners.  You are not required or expected to know a great deal about astronomy but should be willing to learn!

There is no registration required to become a member so all you have to do is show up at some events and maybe join the yahoo group.  Then just sit back, relax, and enjoy the clear skies!!
