Rants

bitterly ever after

I haven’t always had the obsession with Disney movies that I have today. When I was little, I didn’t like Disney very much. This was mostly because I thought that they always gypped the girls. There were no female heroines like Mulan and Pocahontas. The closest thing to a heroine was Ariel from The Little Mermaid, but I had disliked her because she gave up her fin. Who would ever give up the ability to breathe underwater? Honestly… There was Belle from Beauty and the Beast. She had the power of literacy and knowledge behind her! Exciting… Watch out or she’ll read you to death. But when that doesn’t work, her prince will, of course, come to her rescue by ripping you in half with his claws. There was Maid Marian from Robin Hood who was yet another pointless female character who couldn’t manage to do anything but get herself captured time after time. Wendy from Peter Pan was quite similar except she was whinier and more pathetic. Alice from Alice in Wonderland was all right, but she really didn’t do anything. But no one really did in that movie, so it’s forgivable. I did like Jasmine from Aladdin, but then at the end of the movie, she just had to be saved by her prince. And then there were the princesses: Sleeping Beauty, Snow White, and Cinderella. How could all of them miss the fact that they’re married to the same guy? I know Prince Charming is a nice guy, but is he really worth that much? Plus, the three of them never actually did anything… They were supposed to be the main characters, but all they ever managed to do was get themselves into trouble so that their Prince could rush in and save the day. Plus they all had the skimpiest clothes...

So what did Disney expect the little girl who just wanted to play with the boys to do? Just sit on the sides and cheer for them because that was what the princesses did? No, she should run onto the field and hit a homerun over the heads of the boys who said she couldn’t do it. Was she supposed to smile politely when they were given Barbie goodie bags instead of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles ones at birthday parties? Obviously not. Hence, the reason I hated Disney when I was little.

Now, when I’m seventeen years old, I’m still bitter about girls in Disney movies. But they are getting better. Now they have Mulan and she saved China. Other than that, it’s the whole happy ending idea that I love now. Why shouldn’t things always end on a happy note? There are too many depressing things in the world already. Why not guide life in the right direction when you have the opportunity to control it? Movies should be a source of happiness, not something that is depressing.

I have also grown to appreciate the whole notion of Prince Charming. Having a hot guy ride up on a white horse and carry me off into the sunset isn’t a bad deal after all…
