Holiday and other commercials

Some of the readers may have been a bit curious as to what commercials Phil and Staci put on a DVD for Joe to watch. As most people know, during the holidays there are very special commercials that become so popular they’re used year after year. On this page, see if you’ve seen any of these and other commercials.

Budweiser Horses – The famous horses with the furry feet. This commercial has appeared in several different versions. In two versions the horses are hitched to a large wagon where they have jingle bells on the reigns. The wagon has a Christmas tree in it. The horses trot along to another cabin that is fully decorated on the outside.

Coca Cola – These adorable polar bears appear in several commercials. One involves a group of bears watching the northern lights. Another involves two baby polar bears trying to get a holiday tree into their cave but not having much luck. Mama bear arrives and helps to get it inside. The third involve mama bear helping her baby while the baby and a seal share a cola.

Corona – This commercial starts out with a simple tropical / Spanish style house on a small island with a single palm tree on the right. It’s night so in the background the moon is out. The light is on inside the house. A male voice whistles the tune “O Christmas tree” as he nears the end the light in the house is turned off. He continues whistling and Christmas lights in the leaves of the palm tree light up. The words “Feliz Navidad” which is Merry Christmas in Spanish come across a corner of the screen as the commercial fades out.

Folgers – Two versions of this popular commercial are seen ever year. Version one – Peter comes home – It starts out with a young man coming home from college. It’s the outside of the house and the man is getting out of a cab with a large stack of presents. Everything inside and out is decorated for the holidays. The man comes inside as quietly as he can and puts the presents down under the tree. A little girl comes down the steps and sees him. She calls his name and goes to him. He tells her in a small voice “Merry Christmas”. She says that everyone is asleep. He tells her he knows how to wake everyone up. He takes her in the kitchen where they make Folgers coffee. Everyone else in the house wakes up to the smell of coffee. As the adults come down they find the girl and the man setting a place setting of coffee for everyone in the living room. There’s a happy reunion and the commercial ends.

Version Two – Rockapella stars in this one. The group is there with their families in a lodge. They go out to cut down a tree but find the tree too pretty to cut down so the decorate it where it is, and the commercial ends with the group in front of the lodge holding cups of coffee and finishing their song.

Song (half of it): “Cause Folgers warms our hearts... But the tree we love so much (happy holidays) is too beautiful to touch (happy holidays)….”

The families decorate the tree where it stands with hats and gloves.

“….so we left it there for everyone to share….”

The commercial goes to Rockepella drinking mugs of coffee on the front porch of the lodge.

“…A very happy holidays to you from Folgers.”

Fruity Pebbles – Fred is decorating the cave. Leaving a bowl of fruity pebbles all set for Santa. He’s singing his own version of ‘Jingle Bells’. Santa comes down the chimney and joins Fred. Barney is on top of the roof dressing as Santa prepared to trick Fred again. He comes down the room and his beard falls off. Barney says “Santa?” and sees the real Santa eating the pebbles. Barney says. “My pebbles.” Fred is mad. “Your pebbles?” Santa says “Tis the season to be sharing, Fred.” Fred gives Barney his own bowl of pebbles and says, “Happy holidays.” The commercial ends with the traditional sight of Santa and his reindeer in the air. Fred and Barney are eating the pebbles.

Holiday Hershey Kisses – Hershey Kisses have been wrapped in red and green holiday foil and set up on a white background. They are lined up like bowling pins. There is a separate silver Hershey Kiss that is sitting in front of them. This kiss is the conductor. With his flag waving all the other kisses start waving like bells and sound out the first piece to the song “We Wish You a Merry Christmas”. It ends with a red bell in the middle row having to do a mini solo piece.

M&Ms – It starts out with an elaborately decorated living room and dining room. Red M&M and Yellow Peanut M&M are coming from the dining room. Red is carrying a bowl of red and green M&Ms. Yellow asks Red “Do you know if Santa exists?” Red answers “How do I know I’ve never met the guy”. As they enter the living room, Santa has just come down from the chimney. All three scream at each other. Red says. “He does exist!” Santa says “They do exist!” Both Santa and Red feint. The commercial ends with Yellow saying “Uh... Santa?”

Miller Beer – A man has placed a multitude of lights and other lighted decorations in front of and on his house. The commercial begins as the lights have been timed to turn on and off in a special sequence that move in time to the Trans-Siberian Orchestra song “Wizards in the Winter”. The commercial doesn’t go through the entire song but fades out midway through.

The house and the light show are for real! In Manson, Ohio, in Winding Creek Court, the Carson William’s house is the house in the commercial.

Oreo Cookies – A child is asleep in a large lazy-boy chair. The house is decorated around him. Next to the child on a small table is a plate of Oreo cookies, a glass of milk and a note for Santa. Santa appears. Santa begins to eat the cookies and dunk them in the milk. Just as his finished the last cookie, the child begins to stir. He leaves. The child wakes and sees the empty glass and plate and a thank you note from Santa. (In the background a man is singing the Oreo jingle that has been changed for the holiday theme.)

Pet-Smart Welcome Home – It’s the holidays but it’s raining. An instrumental version of “I’ll Be Home for Christmas” is playing in the background. An elderly man in a rain coat and rain hat runs for the bus but it leaves without him. He walks home in the rain. By the time he gets to his house, he’s drenched, but as he opens the door to his house, his dog is patiently waiting with the man’s slippers in his mouth. The man hugs him. The commercial switches to the man dry and happy and giving the dog a biscuit in his living room. The commercial ends with the Petsmart logo appearing in the corner.

Poloroid Camera – I think this was the last attempt for the company to market their instant camera. The commercial starts out with Santa and an elf going through Santa’s mailbag. Santa is not wearing his coat, but is frustrated because he doesn’t understand what toys the kids are talking about in their letters. Each time the he tries to read it, he gives up and says “I don’t know what the heck he’s talking about.” The elf says “Horse ‘em”. The elf picks up a small wooden toy rocking horse and tosses into Santa’s toy bag that’s got a hundred more of them. Santa goes to his next letter and says is about to give up. The elf gets another horse ready, when Santa reads the last part of the letter that says. “This should help.” The kid has included an instant photo of the exact toy he wants. The commercial switches to two kids on holiday morning. It shows the one who got the rocking horse, while the child who sent the photo got the robot toy he wanted.

Staples – This commercial starts out with two Staples employees talking about their ideas for advertising for holiday gift ideas. They talk about their robot idea. The robot is a friendly one that is going through the store talking to the customers about the gifts they are going to buy. The robot goes over to where a man is standing next to a multi-function printer. They are looking at the display. The man asks the robot to tell him more about the printer.

Robot: No. Get him a cell-phone.

Man: No, he really wants one of these printers.

Robot: He can’t have her, I love her!

The commercial flashes to the two employees who come running over. The robot and the man are tugging back and fourth on the printer.

Robot: No, no, no!

The employees pull the printer away, and the man walks away with it.

Robot: Weeping, weeping.

First employee: Don’t worry.

Second employee: We’ve found another girl for you.

Robot: Oh?

The robot purrs when they show him a power strip. The commercial switches to the red back drop and the Circuit City logo comes on, typically with some of their latest sale items.

Toys for Tots – It starts out in a building similar to maybe inside the Lincoln memorial. There is a Marine in full dress uniform standing guard, standing perfectly still. A boy about the age of ten walks up to him. He’s dressed in winter clothing, but it’s not elaborate. Something a child with poor parents would wear.

The boy walks up to the Marine and says. “Are you Santa Claus? Somebody told me you were.”

The Marine continues looking ahead. The boy holds up a piece of folded paper, his letter to Santa.

He continues looking at the Marine. “Are you Santa Claus?”

The child looks down and is about to turn away when the Marine turns his hand towards the child. The child’s face lights up as the places his letter in the Marine’s hand. He smiles and walks away. The Marine continues looking straight ahead. The commercial switches to a promo for Toys for Tots.

Take Me Out to the Ballgame – A SUV commercial that has a father and son going to a ballgame, most likely the L.A. Dodgers or California Angels. The commercial has father and son with a pair of kayaks on top of the SUV and they’re driving through what looks like the streets of San Francisco. A very popular, sounding like the band Lifehouse, version of the song ‘Take Me out to the Ballgame’, is playing in the background. The father and son have a close resemblance to Fenton and Frank Hardy. They are both dressed for kayaking. Towards the end of the commercial father and son are paddling their kayaks along with other kayakers behind a baseball stadium on the bay. The commercial ends with the son looking up towards a baseball that’s been hit out of the stadium out towards the water.
