Chapter 11

When Frank returned home he found the person he believed to be his brother sitting on the front porch waiting for him. The blond boy was seated on a wicker chair with his feet up and munching on an apple. Frank dropped his extremly heavy back pack down on the nearbye table and plopped down across from his brother.

"Boy I hope the meeting went well little bro, cause I am getting a bad back lugging Both of our homework assignments!" The older dark haired Hardy boy complained. Joe made a face.

"Hey, it wasn't my idea ya know, I thought I was going to get a break from Homework." Joe/Paul Joked.

" You are already spoiled enough Brat!" Frank replied sticking out his tongue."

" Can you be more jealous of me?!" Joe teased. Only to be rewarded with a throw pillow in the face. paul thought that this was heaven compared to some of the things his step father would hit him with. Instincively he rubbed his chin as a particularly brutal memory came back to haunt him. Paul once again envied the real Joe Hardy and actually Frank Hardy as well. But he quickly recovered by tossing his "bro" an apple from the bowl. Frank caught it in mid-flight.

"I'll take this as a thank you for lugging your crap around." Frank said but something about what just happened had started Frank's mind whirring. He had been polishing the apple and was about to take a bite when something hit him. He just couldn't put his finger on it yet, but he would continue to jog his memory until he did. Paul just stared at the other boy having heard of Frank Hardy's uncanny ability to

think out all the angles of a problem down to the most minute detail while Joe was more impulsive and passionate. Joe would try to think

a problem through but often his impatience and the concern for others who may be in danger had caused him to rush in and fight the bad

guys, the old fashioned way. However, together the two were an almost perfect combination of brains and brawn, Both very different but

each well trained to handle their own in a fight. Unfortunatly sometimes, fate has other plans and they are out witted by the people they are trying to bring down. Even their famous father Fenton Hardy had many a run in with his own foes as well, But like their father, they have used their remarkable gifts,hard earned skills and especially in Joe's case, incredible luck to get their butts out of some very deadly

situations. Frank had no clue that right now Joe was fighting desperatly to contiue this lucky streak, but it really wasn't looking too good.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Joe woke up, his head spun and he felt like he was sucking on cotton balls, He also felt like he had been out in the sun for way too long.
atleast he noticed that he was not completely surrounded by damp darkness this time. Joe lifted his head to look around, instantly
regretting it as his head not only spun worse but hurt like hell and he was not so sure he could keep himself from vomitting the only thing in his stomach, Still he was famished and mad as hell that he was alway's getting into these situations. But most of all Joe had been worried about Charity. Joe tried to get his foggy brain to focus, Did that woman say she was Charity's mother? Did he hear correctly, was she really the leader of the Assassins? "When did that happen" Joe wondered, and what about that murdered Rousassa
had he really been killed or was that yet another cloned chump who gave his life for "the Cause"? Joe heard a door opening and tried to
assume a position which would make his captors think he was still out of it, maybe he can get some info. This was one of the very first tricks of the trade, that his father taught both his son's. Joe hoped the ruse worked this time as well.
" Is he still out?" A strangly familiar one asked. Joe needed to concentrate for a moment when he finally recalled where he heard that voice. Then he recognized the next voice as well.
"Yeah, too bad though, we can alway's try the shock treatment an him Pretty boy might get a real charge out of that one aye?!!! " Greg
said with a maniacle laugh. which caused Brian to wrinkle his forehead in disgust.
"No! you sadistic idiot, we do this the right way. We are just sit here and guard our sleeping beauty over her" Brian said pointing at Joe. who remained hunched in the wheel chair he still sat in.
"Yeah, oh man I really envy the guy who drew the straw to guard that hot babe. Can you believe she is the boss's little girl?"
Yeah, I am almost as shocked as your parents must have been when you graduated High school"
" Excuse me, But Just because I appreciate a great Booty, doesn't mean I am dumb, you are aware of the fact that I am a maber of Mensa right?"
"The exclusive club for the smartest people in the world? No freaking way! " Brian exclaimed not believing his partner for a second.
"Why on Earth would you waste your time working as a bonafide security guard?" Brian asked.
"Same reason you do blockhead, The money!" greg replied his face deadly serious.
"Hmm...good point this job does pay better than our wildest dreams, plus the perks are pretty good huh?"
" You know it dude!" Greg agreed, wondering if he should torture the helpless boy who sat unmoving in his wheel chair, then thought better of it after recalling his boss's warning about the kid being so important to their plan.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Frank and Joe relaxed a little while longer on the porch enjoying the warmth of a rare "Indian Summer" however decided against cracking the books outside, because of a rapidly growing breeze had been interrupting their progress by constantly blowing the pages of their books shut or having to chase after atleast the third incidence of having to race to retrieve papers which suddenly fly away after each strong breeze. So they packed up their things and headed inside where their aunt greeted them with a plate of warm cookies. It was still early enough before dinner and both boy's enjoyed a very healthy appetite, especially Joe who could rival even Chet Morton.

Paul on the other hand didn't seem to share the same enjoyment in food as the real Joe, but tried a few cookies anyway in an effort to

conceal this fact from the alway's observant Hardy family.

"Thanks Aunty, has there been any mail for me?" Frank asked. His peppery aunt nodded and went to fetch the mail. She soon returned with a handful of envelopes. The first one he noticed was a letter with no return address. Frank walked over to the easy chair in the big

living room and began carefully opening the letter. "Oh Wow!" Paul lifted his head up from the chapter he was reading for psychology, in reaction to Franks sudden exclamation.

"Let me guess you are a quarenteed winner in the Publishers Clearing House sweepstakes?" Paul Joked earning a laugh from Frank.

"No silly! It's a letter from Ronnie!"

Paul frantically searched his brain for any recollecting of a person named Ronnie in either boy's life, but could not find one at all so he decided that he had better find away to fake his way through this conversation or atleast until he can access the file on this Ronnie guy. Paul hoped he wasn't important.

"Cool Dude, what does it say? unless it is personal"

"No, It just says that he and his family are ok, they still can't go home yet but the police assured them that they could probably return home soon now that the people at the Weighnright clinic have been taken into custody. He also says he is sorry again for his part in all this. The rest is just about some computer software we had purchased at the Bayside Expo's Computer convention. Nothing you'd be interested in. "

"I would have to agree and say thanks for not sharing the rest." Paul joked. Frank again fired a pillow at the boy he believed was his baby bro. He decided that the rest of the mail would have to wait though because their homework came first and they had promised the girls they would take them out for a double date. After they finished and put away their gear, the boys raced up the stairs to see who could reach the shower first. Paul actually got to it first quickly shutting the bathroom door before Frank managed to stop him. He

didn't have a chance to fight back because the phone rang and Frank ran to get it. As he reached for the reciever he was overcome with a sudden pain in his abdomen. Frank Doubled over in pain and something else as well, fear. Frank's head began to swim, his senses all

a whirl as if someone was attacking him..He wondered if he was catching the flu or something, but it wouldn't have affected him like this

would it? Afraid of falling and hitting his head the dark haired boy gingerly eased down toward his bed hoping to catch his breath and to

rest a moment. But what worried him the most was that the pain was almost exactly the same as he experienced in his dreams ever since Joe was kidnapped.

Paul was just blissfully unaware of Frank Hardy's fate. He let the warm steamy water splash all over his well toned body, his soft skin

had somehow managed to retain the late summer tan he had worked so hard on at his "step-Father's" Mansion. He stopped, not sure if he heard what sounded like Frank calling out but figured it must be because the older boy wanted to take his own shower. Paul sighed

and allowed himself a few more luxuriouse moments under the massaging spray before finally shutting off the water and stepping out of the shower. paul almost dropped the towel he had reached for as yet another painfull exclamation came from Frank Hardy's room.

Paul quickly wrapped the towel around his lower section and raced toward the commotion.

Chapter 12

Frank who now felt like his body was literally on fire, began to wonder how long he could hold out before either purging or passing out,or

both for that matter. He did manage to look up as Paul ran into the room and ran to sit beside him. But he was in way too much agony to answer his "brothers" frantic questions. Frank was almost positive he thought he heard him ask if he should call 911. Frank nodded

and shook as a wave of nausea washed through him until it found it's way to the surface and the convenient trash can that Paul thrust in Frank's face. After expunging the contents of his stomach Frank warily accepted the tissue paul offered to wipe his mouth, By now he was covered in sweat and still in pain however after vomiting Frank the pain had actually begun to fade. By now though Aunt gertrude had entered the room hearing all the noise and came over to aid Paul in getting Frank into his bed. She ran to the bathroom and got a warm cloth to wash some of the sweat away, and hopefully calm her nephew. She too asked if they needed to call 911. But this time Frank who was already feeling much stronger, shook his head against that assuring his worried aunt that he would have Joe drive him to the hospital so Dr. Wilson can take a look at him. Finally the woman accepted this and volunteered to wash out the trash can which had taken on a markedly offensive stench, proceeded to spray both rooms with Lysol and then departed, instructing both boy's to hurry up and finish getting cleaned up then call the Doctor and the girls to explain that they may have to cancel. Both boys promised and had

already gone in seperate directions to do so. Paul went to his room to dress while Frank went slowly into the shower to hopefully wash away some of the pain and stench of the last few minutes. His thought's went even further back as he tried to figure out just what could have happened to him, Back to the boys racing to reach the shower first, back even further to the time when he read the letter from Ron

to his brother, eating the cookies, Aunt Gertrude was considered one of the best cooks around, and her chocolate chip cookies had only

proven that point. perhaps Frank thought, that there was something in the batter? Poison? but his Aunt would never do that,and If so then why did only he suffer, Joe had eaten some too, sure less than Frank did but it should have been enough to cause his brother some

kinda of a reaction. Frank dismissed that theory and drifted even further back into his day on the porch when "Joe" had thrown him an

apple....an apple? once again Frank wondered about the chance he might have been poisoned but then something clicked into place. It

was so subtle that he almost missed it completely, Joe had thrown him the apple with his "LEFT" hand? no big deal except that Joe was

"RIGHT HANDED" Frank wondered why that particular bit of info had struck him as odd but he had long ago learned to never dismiss his

feelings and intuitions because they usually turned out to be true. Frank had to also admit that there had been something bothering him ever since returning from the hospital after the explosion at the weighnright clinic. When they finally found and rescued Joe? Frank

did not like the implications of his next thought but for some reason his instincts were screaming at him to continue. It was almost as if

something was urging him or guiding him to solve a puzzle..then Frank felt an entirely different sensation rush over him, It was as if he had indeed unlocked atleast part of the mystery. He let the warm water run over his body as if it could wash away all his pain, until one

remained but this one was centered right in the chest area. This one was radiating from the heart. Frank felt a sudden wave of relief wash over him like someone had sucked the pain right out of him leaving a different feeling....This one felt as warm as the water and as

welcome as the sight of his brothers blue eye's.

"Iola?"

"Trust your instincts Frank, all is not what it seems, he needs you!"

Frank could not believe his ears, Had he just heard Iola Morton's voice in his thouhts? And what was that cryptic message about. Frank

felt himself shake uncontrollably and hurried to turn off the shower incase he had to get to the toilet to throw up again but this time he

felt no nausea, just shock and perhaps revelation. Frank wanted so badly to dismiss these strange feelings of doubt but the memory of

some of his and Joe's most terrifying and heartwrenching experiences where the Assassins had used surgically altered volunteers to be

instrumental in an elaborate plot to push poor Joe over the edge right where they wanted him. They had set up the whole incident on Halloween almost a year ago as a matter of fact, Poor Joe had been led to the grave yard by an Assassin posing as Iola's ghost,only to be drugged and made to believe that Frank was yet another demon trying to get him. It was earlier that same evening when Frank had finally realized just how devestated Joe must have felt watching his girlfriend go up on a ball of flame, especially as he was forced to be

witness to what he assumed was the death of his own beloved girlfriend Callie Shaw who had insisted on going with him to check out the

abandoned Lazurus clinic. But they finely uncovered the sick truth and manage to locate and save all the victims including their mom and the actress who was paid to portray her. Also involved in the fray was of course the Grey Man, who was himself replaced. Frank jumped out of the shower and ran as fast as his tired body would take him to get dressed. Quickly he donned a pair of black jeans and a white cotton dress shirt and pulled on his black boots. After performing his usual after shower routine, Frank was out the door and making his way down the stairs. There he saw "his Brother" and his Aunt talking, probably about him no doubt. Both looked up at him as he came down the stairs. It was then that Frank saw something that almost made his heart stop. Now Frank was sure this was not

his baby brother. He could have kicked himself for not figurng it out before. The Blue eyes which now looked up at him with apparently

mock concern was definitly NOT the same bright sapphire blue eye's that was Joe's greatest physical attribute. Frank realized that he

could not just go over and accuse "Joe" whoever, that he was a fake. They would probably put him away for his own good. But he was

now determined to not only find a way to expose this creep who was trying to take over his brothers life, But more importantly Frank

demanded to know just where the Hell his kid brother was. It made perfect sense now, Frank realized why he was experiencing these

"Psychic pains" and he hoped to god they weren't reflections of Joe's own pain. He also knew that there was perhaps one person who might know more than he is saying. Frank was by now seething with fury, partially toward himself and others for not noticing it, Angry that he had no idea what those bastards could be doing to his brother and of course angry at the person who came into their house to

keep them all from Joe. There was one more person Frank Hardy intended to question as soon as possible. Frank was now convinced that the Network agent known as "The Grey Man " was for some reason of other, not telling them everything. But first there was the matter of this imposter. Frank not wanting to arouse suspicion just yet and possibly endangering his aunt, simply composed himself and finished the trip down the stairs hoping "Joe" wouldn't catch his look. No he would wait until they were on the road.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A while earlier
Joe didn't know how long he could pretend to be asleep before the two brute's notice him. But he was hoping that he could atleast find
out where they were holding Charity. Joe heard the door open once again revealing Victoria Butler Rousassa. She went right over to
Stand in front of Joe leaning her lovely mature face down as close as possible to the "sleeping" boy.
"Wakey, Whakey Joey, I hope you didn't think I can be as fooled as these two idiots, Ya know Greg honey, being smart enough to be a
member of Mensa means crap if you attempt to use that knowledge! " She insulted the big dark haired guy who stood there scowling, Brian laughed but was interrupted by Victoria's hand shooting up to halt his laughter. "Oh sure laugh it up pin head, You my dear are here because you look sweet in the tight little uniforms I give you." She abrubtly turned her attention back over to Joe. Moving her lips
as close to his swollen face as possible. Joe could feel her minty breath on his chin. "As for you my favorite pet, I am so very excited!
I mean I can't wait for you to finally meet the person who will change your life forever! " Joe searched her dark green eye's for some
sign of sanity but found none.
"I'm very intrigued, mind telling me what is going on? I am just no good at suprises" Joe said with his trademark wining smile, hoping to charm her into revealing as much as possible. He felt her lips move even closer to his until they met in a kiss which sent Joe reeling. He tried to resist but the mingled scent of her perfume and breath mints were just too much for the young man to bare. Joe gave into the kiss however, as she finished he abrubtly chomped down on her lip.
"Ouch!! hey you little brat!" She exclaimed before pulling her well manicured hand back to fire a hard slap across his face. "Ooh you'll be sorry for that. I was in a cheerfull mood and now you've gone and ruined it Joey?!" She stood up and motioned for Greg to join her over in the corner for a second. After conferring for a moment she sent Greg on his way out the heavily guarded door. The dark haired man returned shortly with a small plastic case. Joe strained his eye's to get a better look at what the man was doing but Victoria had
reached over to hold Joe's chistled handsome face in her hand. "You were a naughty boy precious! Now I have to punish you. But don't you worry soon enough all of "Joe Hardy's" memories and attitude will be wiped comepletely clean and I will have a gorgeous slate to mold into whom ever I want you to be!" She said with a venomous smile. That almost caused Joe to give into the fear that had been threatening to rise up to the surface, The overwhelming fear and heartbreak that his family and friends just might not be coming to save him this time.. To save this mad woman from wiping out his whole life, but even worse she threatened to take away the only connection he had to Iola..his memories. Joe Hardy had tried to conceal the look of sad realization but it was too late the woman not only caught the look but smiled the most smug look he had ever seen. That smug smile was still plastered on her twisted red lips as Greg slowly approached and as Brian subdued the struggling boy, and as Greg plunged the needle into his arm. She was even smiling as the gut wrenching pain started to push it's way all around his system causing him to writhe in pain and nausea until finally he had no choice but to expell the vile contents inside his stomach. Joe had also sworn he saw the witch smiling as his exausted sweat and vomit covered body finally stopped heaving and surrendered to the sweet release of unconciousness which led him straight down the golden path of oblivian. One word of comfort escaped Joe's parched lips.
"Iola!"
~~~~~~~~~~~~

Frank was still reeling himself,This time however he was sick to his stomac with worry. "What were those bastards doing to his Brother"

he thought. Frank knew he had to gain control of his emotions, including the hatred he had for this person beside him. But there was a

nagging thought at the back of his skull. Why had this guy shown so much cncern for his well being. Surely if he was an Assassin then

wouldn't that moment have been the perfect opportunity to kill him and make it look like Joe did it? Something was just not right about this scenerio. Frank's thoughts were interrupted by the voice which sounded remarkably like his brothers but for some reason, not as much as it did before he realized what was going on.

"Frank?! Are you alright man? You want to call the girls and cancel. I'm sure they would understand given the cuircumstances" Paul asked. Frank considered answering no to the suggestion but then a thought crossed his mind. There is perhaps one other person who

might be able to tell the difference between the real Joe and this imposter. Vanessa Bender of course! he exclaimed to himself. Then

Frank also recalled his brothers often volital relationship with Callie. Although He realized that the Assassins must have very carefully

trained this guy to take over Joe's whole life perfectly there had to be something they missed out on, something that will prove beyond

a doubt that Frank was right and Not on the verge of a nervouse breakdown himself. Frank Hardy also vowed that if it was true and if Arthur Grey knew anything about this then there will be Hell to pay. Frank turned his attention back to "Joe" hoping to not let on to him. He was wise enough to also realized that the Assassins earned their title as cold blooded terrorists for a reason. They would not even

hesitate to murder anyone who gets in thier way.

"Frank?" paul repeated, staring at him with what Frank could have sworn was an actually sincere look of concern.

"Huh? oh yeah sorry bro I was just deciding. Sure, I would love to keep our date, I owe it to Callie ya know and you haven't actually been able to spend much quality time with Nessa right?

"uh yeah, She is something else isn't she"

"Aren't we all little Bro, aren't we all"

"Huh?"

"Oh never mind Brat, It should be great, I feel much better anyway, maybe it was something I ate." Frank lied.

"yeah, the school cafetaria special no doubt, I definitely didn't miss that since being on suspension "

"Oh sure, what about the time you had two helpings of the Chicken Curry Suprise!" Frank goaded. He had a trap set and hoped that his "brother" fell for it.

"Yeah well, it must have been on a bet, you know how me and Chet are alway's trying to see who can out eat the other one."

"uhuh, I believe it was actually, yuck makes me queazy just thinking about it. The smell of all that Curry alone was enough to gag me"

"What's the matter with Curry, I love the stuff?" "Joe" declared. "Just not Chicken Curry suprise" he added with a giggle. Frank was now almost convinced that he was right. But there was still not enough to make a confrontation. He joined in with a slight laugh and

pushed the bile down his throat. This though was clear, either the Assissins were getting sloppy in their training which he highly doubted, or this guys was not one. Either way the guy had just made a horrible mistake that might have possibly just blown his cover.

Frank hoped it was not a mistake that could cause his brother a whole lot more.
CHAPTER THIRTEEN

Fenton Hardy was busy on his own investigation into the whole Miller Campaign, He had found a way to somehow get Phil Cohen on the inside working as a web site creator. The young computer genius and one of the boys closest friends and associate's had accepted the

idea immediatly. He too felt the need to help bring down the people who hurt his friends. Not to mention the fact that this could be a

front for terrorist activity, this point sealed the deal and made him even more determined to help. Fenton of course had some reserved concerns about the boy's safety, however, Phil pointed out that he was far from new to this stuff and also that the only other person he

could think of who could work a computer better than Phil was his oldest son Frank however Frank's presence would be way way too suspicious. Fenton thought of both his son's and the fatherly pride threatened to burst his heart which had already swelled a bit. He had to admire this brave extremely intellegent young man as well. His boys had chosen their friends well and it made him feel more

confident and proud than even before.

But as for Fenton himself, he was for the moment stuck waiting until the boy could send him something he could work with. Fenton paced in his office. interrupted only when the phone rang. He sprang to answer the device.

" Hi Frank, hey are you ok son you sound a little weak?" He asked as his oldest child greeted him.

"Never could fool you huh dad, Listen I really need to be quick about this and I hate being so cryptic but I really need you to do me a

favor, I can't seem to reach Phil but you might be able to help more.

"Is this about the Miller Case Frank? How is your brother by the way? The doctor did say he was supposed to take it easy"

"Actually, the Doctor is just the person I need you to call" Frank who had been calling from his cell phone in the van while Joe went in to

a mobile Mart to get some gas and snacks for the Drive-in movie they were taking the girls to see.

"Frank what exactly will I be looking for? And may I ask why son?"

" I can't talk much longer he is coming back soon. Oh yeah, please ask the Doctor to compare Joe's Blood type to the one he had taken

before Joe dissapeared ok?"

"Frank! What is going on here, I can't just ..."

"Dad, It is very very important Joe's life might just depend on those results, please help me and try to be patient, I promise I will try to explain everything to you as soon as possible...oops I have to go, he is back! Bye dad..I love you! please tell mom I love her too, bye"

Fenton Hardy stood there staring into the phone as he heard his child tell him he loved him, something was definitly going through that

boys head. The Ace detective wondered if Both of his son's should seek professional counseling. Heck it might not be a bad idea if he

should as well. However he did know that whatever it was that Frank was working on, it had to involve Joe or his well being. Fenton didn't hesitate another moment before picking up the phone and dialing the Doctor's personal phone number. He was immediatly put through to Dr. Wilson's private line.

"Hello Fenton, I guess you are calling because of Franks visit today? I assured him and I will assure you he is fine, perhaps a bit tired but the stomach pain should have subsided by now, Unless he is worse then..."

Fenton was taken completely taken by suprise by this new info. " Wait, what is this about Frank already coming in to visit you, He was

sick? "

"You didn't know did you?"

"um nope, listen is it possible for us to meet in person, I bave a few questions I need to ask you"

" Sure, can you come over right now? I am just closing my private office for the day but I am supposed to go report to the Hospital to check on a few patients of mine?" The Doctor suggested.

"Sounds like a plan, and thank you for informing me about the boy's visit, I was not home earlier and have yet to see any of my family. although Frank did sound a bit off on the phone"

"Fenton I literally know your boys both inside and out, they probably didn't want to worry you."

Fenton laughed at the Doctors pun, "You know I'm sure you do know them 'inside and out' " He said still laughing only now the doctor joined him. Soon they were off the phone and Fenton was already putting on his New England Patriot Windbreaker. Before he left he

wanted to check in with his sister Gertrude to find out what she knew about Frank being so sick he needed to see the Doctor. He found his sister in her room sitting on her bed reading a daytime TV digest which featured the host of her favorite show, Jerry Springer. It was

a sort of a secret enjoyment of hers, which both amused and baffled her family. But it was also so not the type of show or host that fit her personality. But Fenton was only one out of a few people who knew that the woman actually knew Jerry Springer in person. So he

had atleast a small understanding of why his sister was so devoted to the man, but the show was entirely a different subject. Fenton

chuckled to himself as he knocked on her door to her room. She instantly looked up at her younger brother. She put the magazine on

her night stand and invited him in.

"I suppose your here about what happened to Frank dear?" She asked.

"Yeah actually, I just talked to the Doctor who informed me that my son was in his office today complaining of being sick. "

"Well, what did the Doctor say, is the boy alright? Oh god I hope the Leukemia isn't back oh Fenton what if.." Fenton regretted worrying the woman.

'shh...no Gert the Doctor said he was fine, probably a stomach virus coming on or hey, you never know what could be in the food they serve at lunch."

"I am well aware of that, especially after what happend to Joey that time he accidently ate some Curry."

Fenton sighed, how could he ever forget the sight of his baby boy after a reaction. Joe was just entering 1st grade and it was one of his first times eating in the Cafetaria. Franky, who ate the same lunch period as his brother, had told their parents that Joey was so very

excited about eating in a real school cafetaria with his big brother and new friends,that he didn't even realize that some of the spice had

some how gotten in or around his food. It turned out that Joey had developed a very serious alergic reaction to the spice. Fortunatly a

quick thinking teacher had called 911 and kept the boy comfortable until he could be rushed to the hospital for emergency treatment.

Fenton also recalled the horrific look on young Franky's little face as he witnessed his brothers reaction. So since then Joe has brown

bagged his lunch ever since. Occasionally Tony Prito's Father the owner of Mr. Pizza would deliver some food to the kids as well. The kind hearted widower was very good to them all which inturn also meant a booming business for his resteraunt as well as his other big

investment "Prito Construction" Which he co-owned with his Brother.

"Fenton, Didn't you just get in?" She asked noticing his patriots coat.

"Yes Gertrude,Frank asked me to check on something for him. So I set up an apt. " Fenton replied not wanting to worry his sister by revealing that it was actually the Doctor he was meeting. He didn't even know what Frank was up to but it did pique his interest.

"Alright, Any word from Laura I have no idea what we are having for dinner yet and I was wondering if she had any plans."

"No, She did say she might be working a little late at the Red Cross today. Why don't you make some Spagetti and Meatballs? I am sure she won't mind..I know I won't. " He sid with a laugh .

"You are the world's oldest Brat you know that?" She said laughing as well , Fenton bent down to kiss her and left. She returned to her

reading.

Chapter 14

The more Frank Hardy thought about the imposter beside him, the more stewed he became. It was however to his credit that he was able to control and conceal this growing anger he felt. Frank looked over to observe Vanessa Bender and his own girl Callie Shaw as they sat on the swings giggling together so innocently. Although, the sight of two of the most important females in his and his brother's lives, in such a lighthearted fun moment would be a much needed relief from the pain and suferring that seemed to plague them all, Frank still could not allow himself to relax. The dark haired boy frowned then quickly tried to turn his head so as to avoid being noticed. Too late, a look of concern crossed Callie's pretty face as she turned her own head just in time to catch the shadow that spread across her boyfriends

handsome features. Callie murmured something to Nessa while rising from the swing, Nessa waved her off and turned her own attention to "Joe" who had come up behind her and began pushing her on the swing. Frank felt a tap on his shoulder, followed by two hands massaging his tight neck. Callie was not

suprised to discover that his shoulders were extremely tensed,especially as he watched Joe and Vanessa. For a moment Callie was taken aback with a small\surge of jealousy, could Frank be more interested in his brother's girlfriend than he admitted. Her hands dug into his shoulder and neck than she realized

which caused Frank to suddenly jump in pain.

"Ouch! hey baby, I appreciate the massage but that kinda hurt" He said wincing. "Joe" and Nessa both looked up from their fun. Frank looked up at his girlfriends green eye's which held an apologetic stare and much more intense emotions than he expected. "It's alright hon, I really needed tp relax and that was a great start.

Callie blushed a pinkish shade of crimson and smiled as she drank in his sincerity. Gawd she loved Frank Hardy! Now her feelings for "Joe Hardy were a totally different matter altogether. True she would always be grateful for the "child's" protectiveness for his brother and everyone else for that matter including she had to admit for her ownsafety as well. However, that was just about the only thing she could tolerate from this kid who had managed to not only steal precious time which she could be sharing alone with her Frank, but Joe had been a constant cause of worry,concern and stress for her beloved,

the shoulders beneath her touch were proof of that as she continued to feel them tighten each time Frank looked at Joe. Or was is Vanessa? Callie pushed that concern right out of her often paranod insecure thoughts and somehow managed to shake it off as yet another moment that should have been hers. A moment that was forever stolen by Joe Hardy.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Joe's mind continued to spiral down into oblivion, until it was as if a safety net was quickly shrust underneath him, to break his fall. His jumbled senses sought out his latest "savior" almost expecting to find his brotber Frank . However the lovely face before him definitly did NOT belong to Frank. Joe smiled as a sensation of peace and overwhelming love began to sweep all through his mind and body. It was as if he was feeling this persons love actually flowing through him. Only one person could evoke such a reaction, And it was not Vanessa Bender. True Joe's heart was finally warming to the idea of allowing itself to accept the blue/grey eyed, willowy haired blonde
who was his current love into it, and as a very important person in his young often troubled life. Yet there was still only one other love who would forever occupy his thoughts and his heart. Joe once again found himself speaking her name, once again reaching out for her
in the swirling void of drug induced unconsienceness.
"Iola?" He called out dissoriented. Joe was desperate to find his lost love, to finally embrace her again and allow her to lead him to his
salvation, to anywhere actually, anywhere she was. Where he was safe,warm and most of all loved. Joe was tired of the torture, tired
of being a victim, most of all tired of being afraid.
"Shh...love, please calm yourself Joe I am here, you know that, you have alway's known that. But you must remember to calm yourself,allow yourself to "see" me. That's it Joe open your heart not your eye's my love"
It was at that moment when Joe Hardy had beheld the most sought after vision in his young heart for before him stood the pixie faced
young beauty with blue eyes and a wonderfully brilliant smile only matched by his own. Joe's heart beamed. His senses felt warmth and a surge of happiness which had been thought lost forever to him. The scene felt and seemed so very real that for the moment Joe
forgot that he was once again under the influence of some cruel enemy armed with a needle and yet another dose of some kinda drug
which now coursed through out Joe's body. Doing who know's what kind of damage.
"I can see you!" He exclaimed softly.
"I know, but we don't have much time Joe..."
"But we have all the time in the world, no way am I letting you leave me again!"
"Oh Joe, You know a part of me will never ever leave you, and no it is not just that lingering guilt that you feel, It truely is my presence,
I will alway's be a part of you,Chet and my parents as well, but it is different with you Joe, I am here in a different capacity for you, I am
what you reffer to as a "Guardian Angel" Joe, your guardian Angel Joey. But I really can't stay too long, they have very strict rules up here you know requarding these 'meetings'. I am not supposed to reveal too much but I did want to warn you that it will get worse for
you before it is over .."
"Gee, whatelse is new?" Joe interrupted sarcasticly chuckling softly as he recalled the way too frequent horrific experiences in his young life. Apparently this would be not much different that is if he survives that is.
"I thought you would find comfort in the knowledge that you are not forgotten Joe and that the ruse that has gone on far too long has been exposed. Your heart has not betrayed you and you will find some very suprising Allies when needed."
"Ok, Iola honey I love you but can you please cut down on the cryptiquotes? I mean if I wanted to hear my horoscope I can read the
paper. Why are you really here?" He demanded. "That is if it really is You and not some hypno-drug induced dellusion like I had before."
"That was not funny Joe! "
Joe searched "Iola's" lovely face and for a moment he swore he saw a hint of hurt in her eye's. He once again felt a surge of guilt wash over him, as he often did when he started to needlessly blame himself for the girl's death. Joe's heart ached for her but he also felt a
twinge of shame because he remembered his growing feelings for Vanessa as well. Iola seemed to be able to read his thoughts.
"Joe, Vanessa is a lovely girl, I couls not be happier for the two of you, however there is no time to discuss that, you are in great danger of loosing everything you hold dear. I am risking alot by appearing to you like this but you are the love of my life and I am never going to abandon you. " The apparition vowed. This warmed Joe's heart even more. But he nodded now fully understaning her urgency and
the huge sacrifice she was perhaps making once again in the name of love, his love. Joe clamped his mouth shut suddenly and allowed her to continue uninterrupted.
"Look to your strengths to pull you through, in yourself and the one's you hold most dear Joe, as alway's. You are not alone and the
threads are even now being unwound, they will lead your saviors to you, But you must remember Joe, even a hero has demons, even the strongest have their breaking point. You are my hero Joe and I don't blame you for what happend. neither does anyone else. I am so sorry but I really can't stay much longer though. But it is aright because I know you will figure it all out Joe, you must. remember a part of me will alway's remain and watch over you. I love you Joseph Hardy, alway's have and alway's will!" Iola Morton said already
beginning to fade away, Joe whose eye's began filling with sad tears, reached out for his first love in an effort to keep her with him but she was slready gone, however not before her spirit once again engulfed the Joe's entire being filling him with the soft gentle sensation of a kiss. An embrace which shook Joe to the very core and filled him with a love so intense and left him with one of the most wonderful
feelings of happiness however brief, that he had ever experienced, along with a surge of inner strength which served to light the way and provide him with the incentive to carry on. Joe suddenly knew there was hope, He realized that Frank was once again on the way, and that Iola had left him with yet another incredible gift. The gift of hope was only part of it, Iola had given him the strength he needed to fight back, but even more she granted him her most sought after blessing to allow his heart to love again. Joe knew their was only 1
person he wanted to share that special gift with.
The two young couples had settled in to watch the Big screen version of "Starsky and Hutch" based on a very popular 1970's television show. They seemed to enjoy the flic, but Frank found himself getting preoccupied with the other couple, a fact that was not lost on his
date who was getting more annoyed by the second. "Joe" aka Paul was taking full advantage of the fact that he was with one of the most beautifull girls he had ever laid eyes on. Which probably contributed to the fact that the boy was seemingly oblivous to Frank's
rather intense scrutiny of him. Paul began nuzzling Vanessa's ear and whispered something which made her giggle. Frank wondered if he was mistaken, gawd he hoped so. He also hoped his dad would get back to him with the results of the blood test. After a while, Frank decided to check his messages but he needed to go somewhere private to do it, so he excused himself and headed to the rest rooms. A
dumbstruck Callie decided enough was enough and followed, there was no way she was going to be left in the van alone with the two
love birds from heck. Beside's just maybe she selfishly thought, Frank really did expect her to follow him to a more private place so the
two of them cold be alone at last. Callie followed at a distance only to see her boy friend go behind the other side of the rest rooms. It
was then when she noticed Frank pulling out his cell phone and press a number.
"Hey, I know I seemed a little cryptic earlier, but it is extremely important, please me you got the results of the blood test?"
"Hello son, I think we really need to talk..in private. Is your "brother" with you now?"
"My Bro..so I was wrong?" Frank felt a bit confused but a little relieved as well, until his dad continued on".
"Frank, I did mention that we needed to talk in private. About a few things, starting with your rather unusual request and the visit to Dr. Wilson that you somehow forgot to mention. Oh and by the way, you are getting sloppy perhaps, it seems you have a spy. And she is not a very happy camper at the moment." His father mentioned with a chuckle before hanging up.
It was then that Frank realized two things, that his father was somewhere in the area watching them, and that his girlfriend was had been standing there the whole time and from the way she stood there with her hands on her curvatious hips, expected some answers to
questions he was not so sure he could trust her or any one for that matter with. Frank blushed and turned to face her impatient stare.
"um..Hi honey, I bet you were wondering what that was all about?" Frank began getting a little anxious himself, but for a different reason, if this guy in the Hardy Van was Not his brother Joe than the creep was probably all over his brothers girl right about now. That was just something he could not allow to happen, Frank knew Joe trusted Vanessa, especially after the whole Brad Miller farce, would be however, be understanding if she didn't realize that this was not the real Joe Hardy, Joe's heart would no doubt still be effected, as would Vanessa's not to mention the guilt the young girl whom Frank also considered a good friend of his. But for the second he needed
to deal with the love of his own life.
"Frank Hardy, I thought we agreed to ban cell phone's tonight? "
" I had to make a very important call to my father Cal "
"Frank what the heck is up with you, I mean I have seen you like this before, it's as if you were staking out your own brother!"
Frank could not believe how transparent and unprofessional her statement made him feel. She had him pegged. Frank wondered if he was loosing his detective abilities, perhaps this whole mess was screwing with his whole reflexes and his ability to act as a professional
Frank also wondered about the fact that if he was that obvious to Callie than what about the others.
"Listen hon, I know you don't alway's like the line of work I do but..."
"But what Frank, Your line of work indirectly caused the death of my dearest friend" She blurted out instantly regretting saying it, but
it was too late. Callie caught the hurt in Frank's large cocoa colored eyes. ''
"Oh God! I am so sorry Frank!" She exclaimed tears welling into the corners of her green eye's. Frank was well aware that Callie had been angry with Joe for quite a while after her best friend Iola Morton's death, but she claimed to have gotten past that. It was this new
revelation that his own girlfriend might actually still blame them..him for the girls death. The Assasins had destroyed a part of all their
lives. This cut A deep wound across Frank's young heart. He however was more concerned with the fact that Joe, The real Joe would be
devasted if he thought that some one else added to the already overwhelming guilt that Joe was already feeling.
"Callie I love you, But you know what Both Joe and I have gone through to get past those crippling feelings, plus you also know full well
that the Assassins were the cause of Iola's death, or atleast I thought you knew!" She shook her head immediatly her eye's took on a sad apologetic look. Frank could see the pain and sadness in her eye's which he knew all too well, It was the same one he often saw in his brothers sapphire Blue orbs. Frank reached his arms out instinctively toward his girl, Callie hesitated only a moment before falling into his embrace.
"I miss her too Cal, Gawd I miss her too!" He whisped as he held the woman he loved, who was such an important part of his life that the very thought of ever loosing her caused his heart to pulpitate and threatened to break. Frank once again wondered where Joe was.
His heart also told him that the other most important person in his life needed his strength and needed it as soon as possible.
Chapter 15
Paul Butler had never felt like this before. Here he was actually allowing himself to enjoy a night out with a beautiful woman. But it was all a sham, a ruse to cover for the fact that the "real" Joe Hardy was probably being tortured right now. Paul frowned his handsome face sudenly turning a pale shade of green, Vanessa who had came up to give her "boyfriend" a soft kiss, noticed the sickly palor of his skin backed away suddenly concern etched on her pretty face as Paul abruptly raced over to the nearest trash recepticle and threw up. Paul had never seemed to share his mothers penchant for the violent life she chose to lead, but after his beloved father's grizzly death, had vowed to go along with the monster he called "mother" if only to protect his sister Charity and perhaps to save his own life as well. But he didn't like this assignment especially since he was growing more and more fond of the idea of stealing the real Joe Hardy's entire life.
Frank's head popped up as he heard Vanessa Bender cry out. Joe or whoever, was now standing over a waste basket throwing up. For
a moment his fears faded and Frank's protective instincts kicked in. in a moment he was beside his "brother's " side with a napkin.
"Geez Joe what happend, are you ok?" He asked.
Paul cringed at the deep look of concern on Frank Hardy's handsome face. Paul wanted to tell him the truth so badly, however, too much was at stake. Then something in Frank's eye's struck him leaving paul to wonder if he knew. Frank Hardy was known as a great detective but was he that good? Some part of Paul's soul hoped so he could use someone to trust. Someone to help him get back at his mother and save his sister. Paul considered the fact that Frank Hardy might just be the person who is desperate enough to help him, especially if his brother is in there as well.
" Well" Frank asked again, his hand on Joe's which gripped the trash can, Paul felt Frank's hand press a little too hard on his and it started to hurt..then it got worse, until the older boy seemed to realize what he was doing and quickly pulled his hand off, allowing his little bro to pick up his hand and rub it.
Paul coughed and stared straight into Frank's eyes. "Uh, yeah man, but what's with the kung Fu grip? "
"Sorry lil Bro " Frank answered. " But you know how I get when my baby brother get's sick"
"Your brother gets...? " Paul began and then clamped his mouth shut. " Listen worry wart your brother is fine. I probably ate too much you know how I can pack it in sometimes"
Vanessa and Callie both laughed at that, and Frank joined in agreeing. The girls seemed oblivious to the fact that something was amiss
with both boys, but were concerned about Joe's health even Callie who knew how much it worried her boyfriend whenever anything was
not right with Joe.
Paul began to curse himself for allowing his emotions to take over and felt like such a wimp. He hoped to god that the Assassins whom he knew were probably watching their every move didn't report this back to "Mommy Dearest" because "The Viper" would never ever
tolerate such carelessness especially from her own children. Paul felt a wave of terror creep back as well as the sickly taste of bile for the bitch who killed his father, uncle and destroyed his favorite aunt's mind seemingly forever. Paul thought of the only two people he could count on his cousin Marissa who had been like a sister to him, and his real sister who had been more like a mother for him than his
real one had. For this fact Paul was extremely grateful and even more intent on bringing Victoria Butler Roussasa and if possible every other assassin down with her. Paul again looked at Frank Hardy and made perhaps one of the most important decisions in his young life.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Arthur Grey, had been growing more and more concerned for the safety of Joe Hardy, the real Joe Hardy. He also began to experience a sensation which he could have sworn was guilt. Grey, knew that there was so much at stake here, much more than Joe Hardy's life or the greedy desires of a politician. He was privy to some of the most confidential documents and it often made him physically ill knowing that he alone knew secrets which could mean the loss of many innocent lives. But this time something seemed a bit different. He had

the sneaky suspicion that perhaps, Joe Hardy was more important to him than he let on, sure the boy was impulsive and stubborn, very

smart,who preferred to use his fists first, But wasn't that suspiciously reminicent of a much younger version of himself? Joe and Frank

Hardy had both proven to be excellent potential candidates for becoming official Network agents, if not outstanding members of law enforcement of any kind. But Grey had a job to do and people to report to. He also had many other lives at stake here, other agents in

the field already, then there was Marissa, She thankfully remained on the outside of the case, looking after Paul. Her lawyer skills were

being put to good use and would provide frequent updates as well as support for her young cousin. Still Aurthur Grey did not relish the idea of putting any of these young people in danger. Even though he also knew he had no choice. They were the only real link to find the viper, these were her family after all. Hopefully, they will get out of this unscathed, including Jot and Frank Hardy as well. These morbid thoughts were interrupted by the ringing of his cell phone.

"Hello, Oh Fenton it's you. " He sighed knowing that the detective on the other end had called to update him on the info Phil Cohen had pulled from the Miller files. The Grey man hated the fact that yet another young person was getting involved in this whole deadly mess.

"Are you sure we can talk?" Fenton asked over the line, far too much was at stake for any mistakes, Fenton was overwelmed that his youngest "son" was home safe and sound finally but there had been long hours of remorse and doubt as well as guilt over the way the

whole thing was handled, including the way he might have handled Joe's need for help both psychological and parental. Fenton also worried about the rest of his family, Frank had been exausting his own strength trying to maintain the protective big brother and good son vow, and the emotional strain was becoming more and more apparent. Fenton was so proud of his family, But worried sick that the

two most important men in his life were being destroyed by a dream he helped instill in them.

"Yeah, But can you make it brief, I have a late meeting with some operatives in a few" Grey asked.

" No problem, the boys are on a double date and gertrude is going to visit a friend of hers who is ill, It should give me and the wife a little quality time, I hope, anyway Art, the computers spit out quite a moutfull. Apparently a few of the companies which made rather sizable campaign donations are actually dummy corporations, well that is except for "Toria Cosmetics" owned and operated by none

other than Victoria Butler Rousassa, the rest check out as legit including one owned by a Mr. Timothy Blake, But I believe we can take him off the suspect list, especially since the man had for some reason, abruptly backed out of not only donating to the campaign but he also cancelled a planned merger between his "Daphne's" departmant store and Toria's cosmetics.

"Hmm...the woman must have been furious! And believe me I know that from experience. Victoria Butler aka the Viper, is not one who

takes betrayal or for that matter rejection well. We have got to find a way to bring this woman down and fast. " Grey added glad that

the man on the other end was unaware that one of his own beloved son's was in this vicious killers hands. Fenton Hardy just might prove to be an even deadlier threat to his own well being if he knew what he knew.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Paul excused himself and went into the men's room to freshen up, Frank followed while their dates went into the ladies room. Frank wanted to keep a close eye on his so called "brother" but knew that it might be wiser if he hung back a little to see if he tried to contact
any one. But to Frank's suprise the other boy went from stall to stall as if checking for something.
"What's wrong no toilet paper?" Frank began, now his interest was piqued, especially after "Joe" raised a finger to his mouth to silent
him. Frank's detective instinct kicked in and he stopped in his tracks while Paul continued his search. Paul stepped into one of the stalls only to come out soon with a roll of toilet paper.
"Uh, yeah brat there's no paper in the stalls except this one. So here is some, " Joe handed the roll to Frank who quickly took it into the
adjoining stall.
"Thanks he said, then looked at the roll, he unrolled a little and noticed that it was unmarked, Frank frowned, in question, but then he had and idea, He unravelled the roll a little more and turned the piece around, sure enough there were words on the other side. He quickly read them and ripped off the message before quickly flushing it down the toilet. Frank sat there, his head in his hands for a second, not sure how to react to the information he had been given, however one thing was for certain, He and this imposter were going
to have a long talk and if his suspicions were correct, Arthur Grey had a lot to answer for as well. As Frank got up to leave the stall he
suddenly turned back and violently threw up. Where was Joe this time, where was his real brother and what were they doing to him. The fear, the guilt and the pain of realization of the fact that he was feeling his brother being tortured had all come flooding back to him
all at once overwhelming the young man. Frank Hardy tried to fight back salty tears as he threw up over and over again until it seemed like there was nothing left. He had to find Joe, and he knew just where to start.
