An important thing to keep in mind as you are beginning your exploration into Witchcraft, Paganism or what have you, is that your safety is of the utmost importance. The message on most of this page is the same -- THINK. Don't assume anything is safe, do your research first. Please, please be safe! Here are a few things to keep in mind:
The "duh's"
- Never leave candles or even incense unattended!
- Make sure open flames are far away from dangling scarves, curtains, etc.
- Keep your hair tied back and out of your face
- Keep sharp tools and objects out of the reach of children
- Do not substitute spells or herbal treatments for the advice of a real doctor. If you are seriously ill, PLEASE go to the doctor and seek real medical help.
On the Internet and in groups
- Never meet anyone who you've met online without a friend with you. Make sure you meet in a public place.
- Do not attend any gatherings or circles alone, bring a friend!
- Before attending anything you read about online, do some research and make sure it's legitamite.
- Before you join a coven or circle, make sure you've spent a lot of time there and really looked into the group and it's goals. Make sure that it has a healthy atmosphere. If you have any doubts, put it to the test: The Advanced Bonewits’ Cult Danger Evaluation Frame.
On Herbs, Oils, and other things entering and leaving the body
- You should always be extremely careful before consuming any kind of herbal products. Even sage causes convulsion if you consume too much.
- I strongly advise against herbal drugs and supplements that are sold in stores. These products are not regulated by the FDA and can contain hazardous products.
- Certain kinds of oils can cause burns if applied directly to the skin -- do your research and see if the oil is safe for the skin! Sometimes oils merely need to be diluted, and other times they can never be applied to the skin at all.
- Allergies! Before using any kind of product you should always test and make sure that your body does not have a negative reaction to it.
- Some kinds of magick call for the use of blood. A few words about this - if it makes you uncomfortable don't do it! Substitute something else. If you ARE going to draw blood use a sterilized pin or needle (dipped in alcohol or something similar) and don't overdo it. Just a drop is potent enough.
