HAIR

"Good Hair, For Colored Girls Who've Considered Weaves When the Chemicals Became Too Ruff" by Lonnice Brittenum Bonner

You can check it out here, read some reviews and buy it! http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0517881519/dragonericasmaga

This book is great! She really breaks it down for you and relates several stories of hair hatred and abuse. I think this book is terriffic! One of the first of it's kind. It's a wonderful start to blowing the top off the Good Hair Mentality. This was the hair bible for me and Nicole during our Sophmore year in the wet gothic wonderland of North Carolina. Mrs. Brittenum Bonner has great style and treatment reccomendations (Hot oiling, twisting, and gentle treatment of your hair) but, this book is weak on the products side.

"Plaited Glory : For Colored Girls Who'Ve Considered Braids, Locks, and Twists", by Lonnice Brittenum Bonner.
This should be another good one (I'll let you know as soon as I get my next pay check! :P). She gets even more in depth with hair styles. From the uptown micro braid to the simple cornrow, braids, locks and twists have come into their own. Plaited Glory gives the lowdown on everything from choosing a braiding salon to differentiating between styles and their costs. More than a "hair-do" book, this is a hair primer with a cultural twist. Photos. Check it out at http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0517884984/dragonericasmaga

Also try Lonnice Brittenum Bonner's "The Kitchen Beautician : For Colored Girls Who Dissed the Beauty Standard When It Became Too Ruff". http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0517884992/dragonericasmaga

Try this one: "Brown Skin : Dr. Susan Taylor's Prescription for Flawless Skin, Hair, and Nails", by Susan C. Taylor

"A Flawless Find!In the midst of the summer's challenges for skin and hair,I am thrilled to have found Dr. Taylor's book. Dr.Taylor has included so much valuable information in a very accessible format. She appeals to our common sense which makes her suggestions palatable and easy to follow. The reader does not walk away feeling bad about choices previously made in the area of hair and skin care. Rather you feel motivated to succeed in moving in a new direction. So often advisors in these areas relish giving advice with out regard for the client. Dr. Taylor's approach is quite different. Her specific suggestions along with product names leave the reader feeling capable. Finally, the fact that Dr. Taylor is a physician gives this reader greater confidence in her advice. Additionally as a woman of color and mother of two girls, I know she can relate to my experiences. Thank you Dr. Taylor for walking us through the maze!"--A reader from Montclair, New Jersey- Diana Artis , July 22, 2003

Culture Politics

Skin Deep : Inside the World of Black Fashion Models by Barbara Summers

This one is about the image pressures that black women have to deal with. These image pressures reach a boiling point in the fashion and beauty world. This is a great read...it really helps you understand the way that "beauty" is something that is constructed and then force-fed to the world. Here's one reader's review: "L. Holland, Waniehol@aol.com from Washington, D.C. , October 2, 1998 Wonderful! Modeling doyenne Eileen Ford once told the author that a book about Black models would be a short one. Skin Deep is most certainly not. This book is filled with the history of beautiful Black women who have made an impact on the world of style. It was a long time coming. Hayao Miyazaki

Nausicaä

Nausicaa of the Valley of Wind, Perfect Collection, Box Set
This is incredible! This reviewer put it well:

Reviewer: Joanie Aitken (see more about me) from Olympia, Washington United States

"I give it 10 stars!!!!! Nausicaa of the valley of wind is a true master piece! It is the best story I have ever read! It truely changed the way I thought about the world. Hayao Miyazaki has a gift for story telling, and Nausicaa is the perfect example! Miyazaki-san is perhaps best known in the U.S. for creating "Kiki's Delivery Service" (Family film)and "Princess Mononoke". While Princess Mononoke easily can be described as a rival for best story, I believe that the morals of Nausicaa far out weigh P.M. The story is captivating and holds true to real life, although the story could be described as "sci-fi". Miyazaki-san has a way of making you feel as if you are right there with the characters, learning the lessons of the earth and trying to prevent the war that could end civilization. While the story seems to take place in the future, it transcends time, as if woven into the very fabric of human nature. Perhaps you might find yourself looking for "the blue clad one" in times of war.(You will understand the reference when you read the books) One warning though: If you buy one book, I guarentee you that the second you finish it, you will be in agony if you don't have the whole series. Do yourself a favor and buy all four! Also: you will not be able to put it down. I stayed up all night once, reading books 3-4 because I couldn't wait to find out what happens next. YOU WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED IN THIS BOOK. I GUARENTEE IT." http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/1569313482/dragonericasmaga
