HISTORIAL SIGNIFICANCE

Thomas Scott (1747-1821) became a founding member of the Church Missionary Society and a trainer of missionaries. He published the Bible commentary weekly and later it was published in six volumes that took 20 years to complete. Ordained in 1772, he served at Stoke Boldington, Buckinghamshire, and was curate of Weston Underwood and Olney and Rector of Ashton Sandford. [oxford.anglican.org]

Refer to Dr. Gene Scott's Bible Collection Tour, Station 30. "Thomas Jefferson once ruefully, or perhaps gladly, lamented his church included only himself." In his late years, he made it his project with scissors and paste to compile from the four Gospels what he took to be the central teachings of Jesus. All lifted directly from the English Bible, he pasted together the verses he felt were "the wheat from the chaff." Jefferson used, for this effort, the 5-volume Scott's Bible to which he had been a subscriber when the First American edition was published in 1804-9 (an example of it is shown at Station 28)"

Letter from Thomas Jefferson, Monticello, April 18.1o. :Sir. Your favour of Mar. 30 is received, & from the account you give the size of the 5th vol. of Scott;s bible I would prefer it's being divided into two volumes in boards. the balance of D 1.75 shall be included in the first remittance I have occasion to make to any other person in Philadelphia, as I have no particular agent there. the books will come safest if put on board some vessel bound to Richmond addressed to the care of Mess Gibson & Jefferson of that place, there is rarely a week that some vessel is not coming from Philadelphia to Richmond. having now ceased to add to my stock of books, I would not wish to extend my subscription to any other of those mentioned in your letter. Accept the assurance of my respect. (s) Th: Jefferson, Mr. W.W. Woodward

P.S. Scott's collection only includes a page from The Illiminated Bible 1846. Does this mean he considered it more important than the TIB? At the end of Volume 5 is a list of the 1,000 sibscribers, including Elias Boudinot (First President of ABS); President Thomas Jefferson and Dr. J. R. Witherspoon.

In 1802 William Young sold his printing business to William W. Woodward. He started a paper manufactory, which provided the stock used by Woodward. In 1804 he was awarded a gold medal for developing a new paper. Reliable sources of paper were hard to come by - and at high cost. Frustrated by this fact, Young decided to build his own paper mill. After eight years looking for alternative raw materials. In 1804, ten reams of paper from pulped mulberry roots and Guaia tree bark were made at Rockland Mill. He was awarded the Gold Medal from the Philadelphia Company of Booksellers. Besides furnishing the paper for Woodward's Bible, his paper was also used by The General Stamp Office of the Federal Government.

This was also the First American Bible to include a preface to explain the reason for this set. The preface was almost 20,000 words.

This was the first Bible in America that was also issued in parts. Each part sold for 75 cents and was 120 pages in 36 parts. According to NYC library site there is an article that says there are no known complete set of Bible parts in the original as issued condition. Harper picked up on this idea of parts from Dodge & Sayre (1814) and issued their Bible in parts in 1843-46

[he lost it]. At end is List of Subscribers, including Elias Boudinot and Thomas Jefferson, and two leaves of Family Record.

DLC has copy owned by Thomas Jefferson which is No 1471 in E Millicent the Sowerby's catalogue of the Library of Thomas Jefferson. Miss Sowerby quotes Jefferson as writing that in 1807 Scott was awarded a Doctor of Divinity from Dickinson College, Carlisle, by persons whose names I never before heard. She also quotes a letter from the publisher asking if he wants the last volume bound as one or two, adding that the price wil be $1.75 more than the original subscriptions of $20 for the set.

NNAB has copy with Volume 2 lacking, Volumes 4 and 5 bound together, and volume 1 imprinted The Second Edition. 1807. Printers note in Volume I (1804) reads The call for the work was so great, that after I proceeded with about 200 pages of volume second I found it necessary to increase the number of copies, and in volume third to proceed with that increased number, which of course called for the reprinting of all the first volume and part of the second. Consequently, there are two editions of volume I only.

Volume I of the second printing contains Scott's note to the revised edition (London 1809) stating that the proper preface will be written after the completion of the revision. This Preface is followed by a recommendation signed by six respecable ministers of the Gospel in Philadelphia including Ashbel Green and Jacob J Janeway who were active in founding the Philadelphia Bible Society in 1808. In addition to the text there are long chapter summaries copious references in both margins and a great amount of commentary in smaller type in the lower part of the page.

This is the first appearance in the United States of the popular family commentary known as Scott's Bible. Thomas Scott (1747-1821), a Church of England clergyman with Calvinist leanings prepared a commentary for the British publisher Bellamy, which was planned to appear in 100 weekly numbers (a procedure popular at that time) Scott was to receive a guinea a number and the first number appeared in March 1788. But because of financial difficulties when the work was completed (in 174 numbers in June 1792) Bellamy was bankrupt and Scott not only had lost his money but was saddled wiith a debt which he was releived by friends in 1813. (Darlow and Moule 1309), Wright (p202) quotes Horne (Manual Bibliography p 259 with the statement that "twenty-five thousand two hundred and fifty copies were sold in the United States of America from 1808 to 1819. Its popularity lasted well into the middle of the century. The last London edition seems to be the sixth, published in 1823."

The Manual of Bibliography (p259) states "twenty-five thousand two hundred and fifty copies were sold in the United States of America from 1808 to 1819." It's demand lasted well into the middle of the century.

And todays market says almost all of Thomas Scott's Bibles (any edition) sell on eBay.

FIRST's FOR THE BIBLE

First Bible to use a new paper developed by William Young, previous owner of Woodward's publishing House.

First American Edition

First appearance in the United States of the popular commentary by Dr Thomas Scott which is highly regarded even today. The commentary is a vast work of labor and neccesitated the 5-volumes.

First appearance of nearly 500,000 scripture references included in this set. Today most of these are sold as "Scripture of Knowledge." This work was developed by R.A. Torrey from references in the Scott commentary and is the most complete source today.
