This listing includes Volume IV only. The first 40 pages are missing, however, the title page to volume II is included in this Bible. SInce the title page for volume IV is missing I've included the Vol 4 marking on all signature pages - so we know this is Vol 4. I do not have vol II except for the title page which was included inside this Bible.

Front, spine and back cover for this listing. [Augustin] Calmet's Great Dictionary of the Holy Historical, Critical, Geographical and Etymological. All the proper names in the old and new testament are explained. Under the direction of C. Taylor, in four volumes [only iv here] Charlestown, Mass, Samuel Ethridge, Junior 1812-1814. First Anmerican edition. Large and thick quarto. Volume IV contains "Scripture Illustrated, by means of natural science, in Botany, Geology, Geography, Natural History, Natural Philosophy". Not in Rosenbach, Not in Singerman. Shaw Shoemaker 2nd series No 25014 records only 2. Also Hills #228.

This is a close up up the edge showing the rag content of the paper. The plates appear to be laid paper but I don't see a watermark.

This is the plate at page 194 showing the form of Naoah's Ark from Genesis vi. Each of these plates have complete descriptions in the text.

This is the plate at page 218 from Genesis 49:21 showing Naphtali is a hind let loose: He giveth goodly words.

This is the plate at page 231 titled Sinai plate II from Exodus 24.

This plate shows the view of the interior of the Holy Sepulchre with detailed explanations.

1813 Calmet's Great Dictionary HILLS #228
Hills #228: "1813 The Holy Bible... Saml. Etheridge, Junr.: Charlestown, Massachusetts Not located #228. O'Callaghan (p 113) reports that he has seen this Bible, but inferred its publication from having found a Biblical map of the land of Canaan, shewing the situation of principal places mentioned in the Histories of Joshua & the Judges, with the above imprint on it."

In Hills book, Etheridge is only credited with three other Bibles: Hills #101 1803 Bible, Hills #109 1803 Bible and Hills #147 1803 New testament. This is the unlocated Bible mentioned above. It is the First American Edition. Etheridge published four violumes from 1812-1817. The London edition of these four volumes list for around $2,000. It was produced under the direction of C [Charles] Taylor a famous English engraver. The four volumes include 175 full page illustrations on laid paper and blank on the verso. This particular volume has thirty-eight (38) of the 175 plates. There are also many illustrations less than a full page not blank on the verso.

Robert Smirke's prints sell for up to $900. (The Departure) is 17.25 X 22 inches. His numbered copies of eight watercolor drawings sell for $9,500.00. He was a British painter and illustrator, who trained at the Royal Academy schools and was later made a member of the Academy.

Charles Taylor, engraver, printseller and bookseller. He studied under Bartolozzi. Visited Paris and on his return cut plates for Robert Smirke and Angelica Kauffmann. Devoted his life to the revision of Calmet's Dictionary of the Bible from 1797 to the fourth edition in 1824.

Peter Maverick, a copperplate printer, was in business with Asher and Durand, opening a firm in New York. The partnership, was dissolved when Durand was soley commissioned by John Trumbull to engrave his famous paiting The Declaration of Independence which eventually was featured on the two-dollar bill.

This volume begins with page 41 titled Expository Index and begins at Exodus Chapter 16:13. Signature is marked "7". And at the bottom of the page it clearly says VOL IV - which is the volume titled. "Scripture Illustrated by Means of Natural Philosophy"is 536 pages + xvi index and errata to Volume I.

The Old Testament expository index ends on page 170. Signature page 23* begins the expository index of the New Testament with an introduction on page 171. The New Testament expository ends on page 189.

Condition: covers detached. first 40 pages missing. very few copies known to exist. Pages are good condition which would make it a good candidate to break into leaves or signatures. Individual plates are intact and caluable by themselves.
