Kenneth Williams, a name that almost everyone in the UK and many abroad can recognise. A man who brought tears of laughter to generations of people and still today young people are growing up knowing of the Carry On films and the man with the funny voice. “Oh Matron!”.
A intriguing man who shone with intelligence and talent as a funny man full of talent yet privately his diaries showed him to be a man who was unable to accept himself and his sexuality. His closest friend being his Mother Louie. It’s hard to know what he really thought of the Carry On films. He would abuse them often in his diaries yet he felt strong loyalty towards them, proved by him taking on the role in Carry On Emmannuelle.
So why do I like Kenny Williams so much???...Well I just think that he is unique. A man of such talent. Basically he just fascinates me!... His private life his comic genius his face there's just something about this guy. I hear many things about the supposed real Kenny and many just contradict each other, So who is the real Kenny...Only those who knew him know the answer to that question. And perhaps it's best kept that way. The way we should remember Kenny is the guy who made millions laugh and still to this day and I'm sure for years to come makes new generations laugh.
So what do we know about this man. Well as most people know he was a very private man who's closest companion was his mother Lou. She lived in the flat next to Kenny and she would often accompany him to official outings and come along to watch him perform in his many various shows. Such as 'Round the Horne' and 'Just a Minute'.
Many close to Kenny say how seldom few were Allowed into his flat and those who were astounded by the lack of character in there. Little decor no warmth only the bare essentials. I find this very sad to think that this man who brought lots of laughter into others live went back home at the end on the night to an almost empty lonely flat. Obviously the flats inside was of his choice but its very sad to think such a person with a happy on screen persona was really a very sad man as you may know from reading his diaries. But rather than focus on his sadder side what about the guy who could make us hysterically laugh!!!... I love his expressions, His movements the way he talks. I love him best in the 'Carry Ons' especially in his doctor roles. With his scenes with Matron (Hattie Jacques).... Most people know him for his comic characters in the 'Carry Ons'. But from what i have heard he actually wanted to be a serious actor and had great potential to be as he proved by some of his roles in plays. But  he was a born comic. And what a a talent he had. I spoke to one man who said how he used to watch him live during 'Just a minute' and he's never meet anyone so funny.
One thing that haunted Kenny throughout his life was his reluctance to accept his sexuality. Disallowing him to have normal relationships with other. Unlike his co stars such as Charles Hawtrey and Frankie Howerd. It's a shame he couldnt love himself like the Public loved him and still do.
